Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sandrow (Vagabond Stars: A World History of Yiddish Theater, LJ 8/77) has expertly translated and edited this anthology of five plays and two scenes written by renowned Yiddish playwrights between 1900 and 1926. Playwrights such as Jacob Gordin, David Pinski, H. Leivick, and Peretz Herschein dramatize greed, capitalism, love, the Jewish immigrant experience, and the triumph of human virtues. The settings vary from an old Russian village to the boardwalk in Atlantic City, but the plays all focus on the moral purpose of life. The introduction positions Yiddish drama in the Yiddish world and provides background information on both playwrights and plays. Translation notes, production histories, and the pronunciations of characters' names are also included. This scholarly and engaging anthology is highly recommended for academic, large public, and research libraries.?Ming-ming Shen Kuo, Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, IN
