My Mom introduced this book to me when I first was developing an interest in WWII. I couldn't put it down. The story of Colonel Scott form learning how to fly, his cancelled B-17 mission, and his actions with the Flying Tigers makes for exciting reading. I enjoed the book and still have the old copy. One thing to keep in mid while you read this is that fact that it IS a war story. One shouldn't expect a love for the enemy in a war story, (I never read one that did). It simply displays the attitudes people had back then.
There many great stories in the actions of the Flying Tigers, and this is one of them. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read war stories. The adventure of Colonel Scott and his P-40 was great to read.

This book is great reading. It tells the personal account of a man who above all things wishes to fly. He takes his flying skills to their limit to help defend Freedom. The book shows the feelings and events that took place during a terrible time in history. To further prove how enjoyable this book was, I am the type of individual who would rather watch a move than read a book. There are few books that can capture my attention long enough for me to finish it and this was one of them.

I first read this book some thirty years ago. Col. Scott's vivid word pictures captivated the 7th grader that I was and I became an avid reader, and a thinker of bigger thoughts. This is not your typical shoot'm'up war story. It's not a Clancy-ish techno war thriller. This is a first hand account of the men that went to China's aide in the early 1940's. It is a snapshot of the personalities and hardships of these heros, and combines action with the beauty the Chinese people and their land. I'm proud that Robert L. Scott is an American, and I'm grateful the he put his experiences and obsevations on paper.

I read this book in its first edition 45 years ago when I was in grade school and the movies were full of the glamour of war. Scott sidesteps the glamour and the heroics and presents a personal view of daily decisions and commitment. There are young men today who would do well to take a look at what went into Scott's personal values and why the author decided he had a helping hand in the cockpit. There is far more reality and humility than, for example, Charles Lindberg's "Spirit of St. Louis". I also recommend Antoine de Saint-Exupery's Wind, Sand and Stars.

Against overwhelming odds, Col.Robert Scott takes you through aside of World War II rarely seen or talked about: Our Efforts overChina. Well written, it gives a feeling for that era. and you realize a small amount fo what they went through. Fellow pilots stafed after the "chuted", etc etc. This was the quickest read I have had in a long time!! Great Stuff!

This book is truely an American classic. Col. Robt. Scott is indeed an American hero and a legend. We are all lucky that this man was on our side! We are fortunate that he had the ability to put on paper the many experiences that he went through and making the reader feel as if they were there. This is truely a great book and the type of book that you hand down to the younger generations so they can appreciate some of the work done for them by people like Robert Scott.

This book is an incredible adventure about a man who has had more adventures than 100 men combined. this story takes you to china and into combat.It is riveting and easy to follow. The audio version of the book is highly recommended and is read by Gen scott himself. it is packed with emotion! What one must realize is that gen scott has written 12 other books, the latest being "The day i owned the sky" in 1986. He is alive and well, 90 years young and living in Warner Robins, Ga., right outside of his hometown of Macon. He continues his work by helping raise money for the Museum of Aviation located at Robins AFB. He even carried the olympic torch when it came there, running the entire length..at 88 years old!! There is definitely more to the general than just this one book, and i implore everyone to jump in with both feet!!

I read this book many years ago on a recommendation from a friend. I am a pilot and my grandfather a fighter pilot during World War II. I recall this book being a good read from that perspective.

My two cents are that if you are not a student of World War II American History, you aren't qualified to comment on items in the context of WWII. I for one am, and could type all day and not make many of you aware of the horrors visited on those fighting with or conqured by the Japanese Army of the day. Needless to say you will believe what you want to believe, especially the right-wing revisionists among you. Imagine that history only knows of the horrors (and their scope) as some poor surviving sole was able to disseminate them. Or that history is skewed in favor of the conquerors or revisionists that wrote it. That means that it is very likely that many of the horrors were far worse or just plain covered up. It only takes one, very graphic account, of Japanese soldiers carving babies out of pregnant women's bellies to make you begin to understand what I am talking about, to say nothing of the scum that participated in operations like Unit 731.

Be glad you didn't live then and have endure what many of our grandparents did, and that you benefited from their sacrifice. Who knows how you would have regarded the Japanese or the Germans or Italians had you fought them in World War II. I know veterans today, that abhor the Japanese to this day, and do I judge them for this seemingly racist bent. Hell no! No human should have had to see, hear and feel what they did. Do I begrudge them my admiration or respect? Again, Hell no! I am a veteran myself and if anything can identify with them.

Col. Scott was a true hero, who attracted the attention of the world after he had served in Gen. Chenault's American Volunteer Group before Pearl Harbor, then afterwards in the Army Air Corps. He tells the story from real first-hand experience. He has the ability to keep the reader focused on each word, and each experience. That is mixed in with his Faith in God for watchcare during such military action. I was privaledged to serve under Col Scott during WW2...and he is still my hero. Bill (Billy) H. Jobe
