4.0 out of 5 stars God is my Coach, September 10, 2009
This review is from: God Is My Coach: A Business Leader's Guide to Finding Clarity in an Uncertain World (Hardcover)
Perfect for : Personal Use, Bible Study Group (There are discussion questions)

In a nutshell: In this book, Larry Julian, author of God is my CEO, helps readers tackle tough business-related questions with a God-centered focus. Every day we make decisions that can have a far-reaching impact on us and those around us. Are we making the right decision, how do we know what the right decision is? A few of the questions you will find addressed within the book are: "How can I keep from being overwhelmed by urgent work demands" (chapter 6) and "How do I live and communicate my faith in a diverse environment" (chapter 4). People argue about religion in the workplace all the time (this fell under the Platform heading). I loved the author's approach to this. He challenges the reader to basically let your actions speak for you. Don't impose your religion on others, and don't hide it, but rather set a good example, and when the timing is right, you will be a testament to your faith. He obviously had a lot more to say, with more wisdom, clarity and examples from life than I have shared here, but I found it to be so impactful, and something that people face all the time in the workplace. This book provides some great Christ-centered advice for some very common issues faced by people in today's business environment. Each of the chapters within the book will work together and help you to create your own "Life Plan" that will help you make those hard decisions.

Extended Review: I loved the table comparing Business Principles versus God's Principles! For example, within a business you are working to achieve some type of result, while within God's Principles, you are working to serve a greater purpose (paraphrased from the table in the introduction). My favorite chapter was the last one, the one dealing with prosperity. For many, a legacy is viewed as what you leave to your children when you die. The author has challenged my thinking to view prosperity as leaving a legacy of relationships with others, and helping to impact their lives in a positive way.

Content: Larry Julian gives us wonderful examples that fall under the following categories: Purpose, Potential, Perspective, Platform, Power, Pace, Place and Prosperity.

Format: Each chapter presents a different issue, along with a scripturally supported solution with plenty of examples and exercises to get you thinking and help you to see your direction more clearly.

Readability: Easy to read. The author has included many real-life examples that make it easier to relate to.

Overall: A good book that will help you to see yourself in a new light, and give you the ability to make decisions that are in line with your beliefs and your purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Business, January 9, 2009
This review is from: God Is My Coach: A Business Leader's Guide to Finding Clarity in an Uncertain World (Hardcover)
Eight of the most perplexing problems of our day are laid out in issue/solution form, with one chapter devoted to each, making this an easy-to-follow guide. Covered are: integrating a career with a calling, fulfilling potential, avoiding becoming stuck in circumstances, communicating faith, keeping pressure at bay, urgent work demands, the best work environment, and your legacy.

Solutions are not always black and white, as the author explains, but sometimes gray. When a person finds himself in a "gray zone," his gifts can be discovered. This nonfiction work is filled with anecdotes to use to facilitate a successful Life Plan. Exercises are added to help identify and develop eight gifts. Included are the five E's of effective mentorship. Discussion Guide follows. Some repetition bogs the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed as a business guide, January 22, 2009
This review is from: God Is My Coach: A Business Leader's Guide to Finding Clarity in an Uncertain World (Hardcover)
God Is My Coach: A Business Leader's Guide to Finding Clarity in an Uncertain World by Larry Julian is a life guide for making the right choices and decisions when you are in the "gray zone," in which there seems to be no correct choice or too much temptation to make the right one. These are the times that try people and determine their moral characters. With God as your coach you will have the empowerment and the guidance to face these times courageously and to make the right choices and decisions. You can become a leader for the right when all around you seems in chaos or just plain wrong. The times in which you choose to do the right thing in the midst of the gray testing ground are the tims that make you strong, and you can depend on God to coach you to the right way. This is the book for business leaders tempted to make the buck rather than make the honest decision. This is the book so needed in our times when corruption in business and government leadership has lead to many failures. Choose God for YOUR Coach, to get out of the gray zone and into the light where there is no need to hide or cover-up.
