Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Readers of Dr. Larry Crabb Jr.'s previous books providing "how-to" information on relationships and spirituality will find this work more introspective and insightful. Octogenarian Lawrence Crabb Sr. here looks back on his life as a husband, father, and man of God. Growing up as a poor boy whose father died young, he describes times of anger toward the God who took his father away. Also in each chapter, Larry Jr. reflects on what his father has written and describes the struggles with God, he, too, experiences. His father's wisdom taught him how to maintain solid faith amid doubts and difficult circumstances. Neither man writes as if he has arrived at a place of spiritual perfection. Without false emotionalism, both writers are transparent and honest, and each admits to his continuing struggles with doubts and disappointments. In the final chapters, Larry Jr.'s two grown sons also reflect on the words of wisdom of their father and grandfather. God of My Father is about fathers mentoring their sons, and it contains the hope that more children will be positively influenced by fathers who reveal God in their lives. Patty O'Connell

5.0 out of 5 stars Candid father's memoirs & his son's respectful responses, September 4, 2010
Has someone you deeply respected permitted you to read his late-night journaling? Crabb Sr. (~80yo) in fact granted his son Larry's (49yo) request to indeed do just that, and this book is the delightful and thought-provoking result. There's a refreshing uniqueness to this generational dialogue between father and son, for what the Crabbs have done is co-write (co-converse) so that we, their readers, may "eavesdrop" on what a loving and respectful father-son "connection" sounds like.

In an era when fathers and sons are too often estranged, _God of My Father_ is the remarkable exception, and it wears well from decade to decade. Originally published (hardback) in 1994, the book has only now, 16 years later, fallen into my hands; GoMF sounds neither dated nor clichéd because the two men deal with subjects that are ever with us: bidding final good-byes to loved ones; being orphaned; desperately praying for God to come to the rescue; spending restless nights on a hospital bed; feeling angst; wondering if we shall be missed when the grave yawns for us; putting the "highs" and "lows" of living in the larger context of Who God is.

A final epilogue where the 3rd generation of Crabb men (22 and 25yo) chime in, contrasting their lives' journeys with their elders', makes for a satisfying end. An excellent and profitable read.
