More About the Author

Kathy Howard calls herself a "confused southerner." Raised in Louisiana, she has moved with her engineer husband around the U.S. and Canada. She says "pop" instead of "Coke" and "you guys" as often as "ya'll." But those things are just superficial - she's still a southern girl at heart!

Kathy has been teaching the Bible for over 20 years to a varied audience - everyone from middle school students to teen moms to church leaders. She has a Masters in Christian Education from the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary. Kathy served on a church staff in Midland, Texas for the last five years until her family's recent move to the Houston area.

Kathy and her husband have three children, a son-in-law, and one precious grandson. When the family gets together there are also four dogs in the mix. Kathy writes to have something to do while she drinks coffee and eats chocolate. The Bible clearly instructs us to hide God's Word in our hearts, but most of us find it challenging to memorize Scripture, even though we know that nothing encourages and gives hope in difficult times like God's Word. In God is My Refuge, Kathy Howard skillfully provides what few books on Scripture memorization offer--quick, easy, how tos! Kathy engages the reader by sharing her own experiences with scriptural topics, providing biblical examples, asking thought evoking questions, and offering prompts to apply the lessons learned from Scripture. Each day's devotional and activity could easily be mastered in five or ten minutes, but the derived spiritual maturity will last a lifetime.

It has earned a spot by my bedside and is a book that I will have on hand to give to people facing difficulties and in need of refuge

When choosing a daily devotional, four elements rise to the top as essential. It must be practical, scripture focused, relevant, and challenge me to amplify my relationship with God. God is My Refuge by Kathy Howard contains all of these elements, making it a perfect daily devotional.

The subtitle of God is My Refuge says "12 weeks of devotions and scripture memory for trouble times." In John 16:33, Jesus says to expect trouble. The topics that God is My Refuge addresses definitely make the top of the list of troubles we can expect to experience in life. Because so much of life includes struggling through troubles, this devotion works for everyday life regardless of if you are currently on a mountain top, in a valley, or somewhere in between. You certainly don't need to feel like you are going through "troubled times" to receive tremendous blessing and encouragement from this devotional. In fact, let me encourage you to order two books when you get your copy. I ended up ordering a second book to send to a friend who is a new Christian. You'll want to bless and encourage another woman with God is My Refuge. I promise.

I come from a long line of worriers, so when I was asked to review a new devotional by Kathy Howard called God Is My Refuge: 12 Weeks of Devotions and Scripture Memory for Troubled Times, I was instantly on board. (As a disclosure, I was given a copy in exchange for an objective review. All opinions are mine, and are freely given.)

This twelve week devotional covers topics such as trouble, illness, fear, worry, loneliness, broken relationships, and probably the biggest thing tired moms deal with...weariness. Each topic is broken down into five days' worth of Scripture, thoughts from the author, questions for further thought, and most importantly, Scripture memory.

I LOVE how much emphasis is placed on memorizing Scripture. We can read books all day long, but how many have we really internalized? Scripture is the enduring Word of God. Kathy shares verses that relate to each topic (only one verse a week, so it's not overwhelming), and when you're in the middle of a huge worry fit, or afraid of something, or dealing with a broken relationship, having the Word of God in your mind to battle the enemy with is a mighty weapon. I can remember times of keeping myself up at night, afraid of what the next day or week or month would bring. Lying there in the dark, the only comfort I had was memorized Scripture. Her tips for memorizing are terrific!

Kathy's devotions go along with each Scripture reading to help us fully understand that God wants us to come to Him with our struggles. Because I'm dealing with some health issues at the moment, "Illness" was the first topic I ran to, just to see what she had to say about it. As soon as I read day one, "God's Masterpiece," my spirit was immediately calmed.

Kathy Howard is simply Kathy to me. She became a friend the moment I met her. Although you can't see her, I'd like you to know that her eyes twinkle - it's the Jesus in her. You will recognize Him in her words as you read this beautifully written devotional-God Is my refuge. Through scripture and personal stories we can't help but identify, because we too have seasons of struggle and moments of desperation-its life! As we journey through this twelve week devotional, our friend Kathy Howard takes us by the hand and leads us to a river flowing with scripture; where the rough waters seem to calm, our fear turns to faith, and peace begins to indwell our hearts. Though the water gets rough, and the twist and turns lead us through unexpected drops, and moments of near drowning, we can be confident that this river leads us into the hands of our loving Father -our refuge.

I was so blessed to receive this devotional in the mail, but I had no idea how deeply it would impact and encourage my life. I am excited to wake up each morning because it means that I get to read a new day, new scripture, and receive fresh encouragment.
Kathy Howard's devotional includes 12 weeks of devotions that deal with specific topics and include weekly scripture memorization. The devotions are easy to fit in for the busy Mom and provide great scripture memory tools. Hiding Gods Word in my heart has further provided me with hope and healing.
I have been most blessed by the week that deals with healing, and I appreciate Kathy's honest and open stories that she shares.
This would be a wonderful gift to share with friends who are walking through grief, struggling with fear, or undergoing any trial. It would also be a great book to use in a small intimate Women's Bible Study.
