God Of Rain, which was more than a year in the making, is even more dynamic than the bands previous three releases and breaks new ground in the current popular music scene.
As with all of the Shave Librarian releases, this CD is conceptual, held together by a subtle thematic thread. The theme is of Asian mystique and novelty, viewed through the Western eyes of wonderment and, sometimes, naiveté. The CD begins with the Eastern-influenced "Oriental Jar" and "New Silver Age," moving through the euphoric time-line story of "Kooper Pills." The Asian theme peaks with the title track "God Of Rain," which is loosely based on ancient Chinese mythology.
The second half of the CD draws the listener towards the West, with the Beatle-esque "Shining Bread," the jazzy "At The Party," turning darker and more mysterious with "Where You Buy Your Days" and the final track "MODA," which is a 'cyborg future western.'
Recorded at Big T Productions in Boston's Chinatown and independently released on Shave Records, this CD presents 8 powerful songs which, more than ever, explore more dynamic and eclectic instrumentation and arrangement, fronted by the unique voice and unusual wordplay of singer/songwriter Brian Riley. The new line-up featured on this new CD includes the talents of percussionist, Fernando Medina and guitarist, Phil Salkind as well as several local session musicians/vocalists.
Stay tuned, and stay Shaved!

I thought I had heard it all,
By A Customer
This review is from: God Of Rain (Audio CD)
There are very few discs that when I first listen to it, I realize that it is a gem. I remember a friend of mine in college that had a concept of what he called "the perfect album." "Most of the time" he said, "even the best of albums force you to suffer through a very dismal song, but every so often, every single song works perfect." Out of nowhere, Shave Librarian has created the perfect album. And they have done it in a very unexpected way, by fusing pop and a sort of mysterious groove that changes every time you think as a listener that you've nailed it. I think the perfect album is a really hard thing to achieve in days when the music market seems less than inspired. You might be able to hit some generic riff and wear it to death as so many do, but it is truly refreshing to hear a band that is innovating in an inspired way and is still 100% a thrill to hear.

I've been following Shave Librarian's music for several years. I never get excited about a new release like I do when Shave Librarian puts out something new. God Of Rain encapsulates so many incredible euphoric and mysteriously dark themes... This band will be at the top of the music scene one day when more people discover what amazing talent they have. Some of the best production quality I've ever heard! And the lead singer looks sort of like Elvis sometimes... An added bonus!...And Get Shaved! I sure did! - Sony Su Tan

Listening Pleasure On A Whole New Level,

I can give 5 stars for this CD. I have worked as the drummer for the original lineup of Shave Librarian. I know how much potential and how much talent this band has. I think everyone that is into thought provoking, head tripping, off to another planet music should have this disc in their library. Truly an original work. Truly Shave! Being original and having that hook these days is a hard to grab prospect - being a studio owner and session musician, I see many bands come and go and I do believe this one will be one that lasts. A taste for everyone.....
