Editorial Reviews

Few have burst onto the Christian music scene with such raw honesty and edgy appeal as Rebecca St. James. With 1996's God, this young Australian went from unknown to spokesperson for a generation. The title track, along with the irresistible "Me Without You" and "Go and Sin No More," were all CCM No. 1 hits. And rightfully so! The title track uniquely alternates a pastoral melody with acoustic guitar and flute while St. James belts out the chorus with urgency and desire. Musically, the rest features moody atmospherics, hook-laden guitar riffs, and St. James's nontraditional yet strong vocals. An artist worth paying attention to, St. James could easily take her place among the Lilith Fair crowd with little apology for her message. --Michael Lyttle

I listen to both Christian and non-Christian rock and this album is one of the best albums I own and is, without question, Rebecca St. James' best effort to date.

There are 11 tracks on the album (Track 10 is extended and contains a 'hidden' track) and all but 2 are exceptional. The lyrics are well-crafted, uplifted and powerful. The music goes hand-in-hand - paired perfectly to give the lyrics the most impact. From time to time, when I'm feeling low, this album is a great pick-me-up and a reminder about the wonders of God, faith and forgiveness.

I bought "God" about 3 years ago. It was the first Christian CD that I had ever bought and still today it is one of the most listened to CD's in my collection. The songs are all exceptionally well written and the music is phenomenal. My personal favorite on the album is "Go and Sin No More". Whenever I listen to this song, I get dragged in every time and by the second half of the song, I am just singing my heart out with her. Rebecca's newer albums are great, but to me, none of them reach the spiritual depth that this album brings me to. All the songs say their message in a plain language that is quite refreshing without seeming extremely preachy about it. Rebecca St. James is far and away my favorite singer in Contemporary Christian music yesterday and today and her albums continue to entertain me.

Although this album came out around the same time Alanis Morrissette was riding high on the top 40 charts with singles like, "You oughta know" and "Ironic," one could not help but name at least ten similarities to both albums. However, what is something completely familiar can sometimes step out of the shadows and become something exquisite in it's own right. Rebecca St. James' album-so wonderfully titled "God,"-is a tour de force of sonic-rock filled expression! A dazzling array of epi-phonic color and vibrance not heard on rock albums these days. Musicians of today can learn a thing or two from this album since it engages your soul to not only seek a spiritual life but to also have fun doing it! Since this 1995 release, Rebecca has released a few more albums, however, it was this album that transformed a "would be" cookie cutter Amy Grant clone into a true and aggressive hard hitter. Every song on this album is great on the ears and it still holds up to todays standard rock fare even 7 years later. A few things to note, this album won the Best Gospel Contemporary Album Grammy in 1997. Other noteworthy albums by Rebecca are "Pray" and "Transform" which are also available...

Rebecca St. James is a brilliant song writer incorporating sound doctrine. She uses her strong voice in a definite rock sound of praise of God and what a Christian should strive to do for their Savior.

God by Rebecca St. James & Teddy T

A song about what God has created and who God is. Then with a question why should he take us as His children.

Scripture Psalm 8:3-4 When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast established;

what is man that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou dost care for him? (Psalms 8:3-4 RSV)

Your the Voice by M. Ryder, A. Quinta & C Thompson

This song is about spreading the Gospel. The message is the least clear of the whole album. That Christians are the voice of God in telling about God's plan for salvation. But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14 RSV)

You Then Me by Bob Halligan jr. and Graham Shaw

Put God first, serve others. Challenge for Christians to overcome selfishness.
But they were silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them, "If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all."
(Mark 9:34-35 RSV)

Speak to Me by Rebecca St. James, Josh Deaton & Teddy T

To prepare your heart to serve God. To listen and obey God. It is a plead to have God direct you.

And the LORD came and stood forth, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for thy servant hears.

This album contains some of the best contemporary Christian music that I've evr heard of. I just want to keep on listening to some of the songs included in here esp. "Go and Sin No More." The more I listen to this song, the more compelled I am to live my life of faith. And it encourages every Christian to just move on and sin no more. This album is a must for every Christian believer who likes to listen to this type of music. They're really great. You've got to listen to it.

Let me just explain that I went from not knowing who RSJ was (about two days ago) to absolutely loving it. A little quick, I know, but according to the majority vote around here, not too rare. Amazing...my favourite tracks are 'God'., 'You're the Voice', 'Abba' and 'Go and Sin No More,' but all in all absolutely fabulous. BUY, BUY BUY! (my little outburst of the moment.) God certainly directed His gifts in the right direction *here*..true, eh? Keep singing Rebecca, 'tis all I can say.
