Turned Me on To Rock and Metal,
By
This review is from: The God of Rock: A Christian Perspective of Rock Music (Paperback)
I was probably 13 when I was given this book at church. It actually became a handbook, of bands to check out. I got into heavy metal and hard rock from reading this book....not probably what the author had in mind, but even back then, I knew it was a bunch of hooey. Heck I may buy it again LOL.

Yah i pretty much agree with the previous reviewer. I'm writing this because this book is a pretty hilarious read. The author is some preacher from Dallas and he virtually skewers just about every popular rock and some pop from the 60's, 70's & 80's. And what he says ranges from the ridiculous to the even more ridiculous and more off-base. Anyway this book can be fun to read amongst fellow music lovers etc. But to take this book seriously(as it was apparently intended) would be the real joke!

This guy is/was a small-time preacher hell bent on scaring everyone about the 'evil nature' of rock-n-roll. A poorly written book that attempts to warn readers of Satanic plots hidden within rock-n-roll music. Haynes opines that there is an organized Satanic effort to possess listeners (especially the children). He uses weak arguments based on album covers, band names and lyrics (usually taken out of context) as a 'boogie-man' list of why rock music is pure evil. He certainly had an audience (my parents and teachers) back in East Texas during the early 80s, but now his hysterical accusations seem comical. I'm sure he made some money on this book. My KISS albums got thrown away. Today we are all much wiser and not as gullible to the author's unsubstantiated rantings. Borrow this book for a hilarious read and a snapshot of 1980s Bible-belt fundamental Christian narrow-mindedness.

This book is a great example of the more over-the-top popular christian writing of its day. As noted before, it is a great read for rock fans and very entertaining in its sheer chutzpah. He even has a page on my own personal favorite (not to mention obscure) band, Hawkwind. Highly recommended.

Oh Boy!,

This book is fabulous! If you are looking for great potty reading, I highly recommend it! The author clearly shows how Satan has directed rock music through the use of imagery, cultural coercion, as well as other methods, such as "backward masking". In reality this book illustrates another attempt of fundamental Christianity to find a demon under every stone, so to speak. That everything that is non-Christian is innately evil. The author actually suggests that there is communication directly between rock stars, or some other appropriate official (i.e. managers) and Satan. While I will agree that the music industry is full of greedy, evil bastards, I'm not so sure about their interactions with supernatural beings. I wonder if this is like that move "Bedazzled". I wonder if it ever crossed this guy's mind that they do it for shock value so people like him will write books and go around the country "witnessing" to people that rock music is evil. Those people will then say, " huh, I wonder what they sound like" and then head out to Blockbuster to pick up the album, for an example of this remember the 2-Live Crew? I mean really, do you think the Devil would have anything to do with a band like Cinderella? |
