Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Imagine Remains of the Day rewritten by an Agatha Christie with a nasty sense of humor, and you'll get some idea of why Dorothy Cannell's new mystery is such great fun. When Sir Henry Gossinger announces that he intends to leave his stately home to the man who has been his butler for 50 years, all sorts of upper-class stuff begins to hit a variety of fans. The elderly butler is drowned in a toilet, his sharp-witted granddaughter is exiled to London, and greed is only one of the seven deadly sins that go for a romp over the glorious grounds. Cannell displays a similar combination of talents in Femmes Fatal and especially How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams, both available in paperback.

From Publishers Weekly

Nothing is what it seems to be in this wickedly amusing mystery from the author of How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams. Whether the action marches along in a stately country home or spins off in the bustling streets of London, there is no letup in the story's wit, charm and intrigue. Flora Hutchins has grown up at once-magnificent, 12th-century Gossinger Hall under the loving care of her grandfather, the meticulous head butler, known for his scrupulous handling of the family silver. But imagine the consternation that ensues when the elderly Sir Henry Gossinger (recently married to the distinctly lower-class Mabel Bowser) announces that he intends to leave Gossinger Hall to this treasured servant. Mabel is moved to nasty thoughts, a cousin is outraged and, when the butler's body is found head-down in a medieval toilet, it sets off a sharply etched chain of events that includes Flora being exiled to London?her flat paid for by Sir Henry and Mabel. Questions abound: Who is the mysterious woman shadowing Flora? What is the importance of a long-missing 18th-century tea strainer? And above all, why was the estate to be left to the butler? Flora and Vivian, Sir Henry's seemingly worthless nephew, seek solutions and form an endearing bond. Cannell sorts through all ancient and modern enigmas, fashioning a sterling cast for a royal romp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great New Characters, April 9, 1998

This review is from: God Save the Queen (Hardcover)
I thoroughly enjoyed God Save the Queen. I have read and enjoyed Dorothy Cannell for years and was very leary of her writing books that were not about Ellie and Bentley T Haskell. Dorothy didn't disapoint!! Flora and the other new characters are every bit as charming and fun as the old. Dorothy stayed true to her writing style and demonstrates her great and unique sense of humor. This book is fast reading and fun! I can't wait for the next one to come out.
