Jesus responds to the question about the greatest commandment with two Old Testament commandments.The first, known to Jews as the Shema, says that we should love God with all our heart, all our soul, and all our strength. The second, to love our neighbor as ourselves. They are parallel commands and, in Jesus eyes. Matthew 25--that when you have done it to the least of these you have done it to me, makes the same point: loving God and loving each other are the same thing. In a culture where relationships are often divisive and exploitative, and where the call to love enemies seems impractical, this book offers the reminder we are interacting with God as we engage every relationship. This book examines relationships of intimacy, authority, rivalry, and otherness to show how learning to love within those relationships affects our relationship with God.

With warmth and humor, Anne Robertson explores the ways the Holy Spirit connects with us through our fellow humans (and non-humans). This book quite timely, as it covers not just face-to-face relationships but long-distance interactions made possible by our modern technology. This would be an excellent selection for a book group or Bible study class, or just for someone who wants to deepen and enrich his or her relationships.

I also recommend Anne's previous book, God's Top Ten--Blowing the Lid Off the Commandments.

My adult Sunday school class used this as a study. It's marvelous! It opens up your thinking about relationships and how God works in and through them. Even including relationships with pets as well as cyber relationships - like on Facebook and in online games where you create an avatar and live an "alternate reality." It appeals to many ages, from youth to older adults. Highly recommend it for either personal study or group study. On top of everything else good about it, it comes with discussion questions!
