Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"John Conroe's first book does more than display his familiarity with the currently popular sub-genre of vampire stories. It also showcases a truly individual and engaging storytelling
voice. With intelligence and sly humor, Conroe has crafted a tale that is more than mere genre fiction. It's a truly engaging and rewarding read." - Joseph Bruchac,
Award winning author of WOLF MARK and KILLER OF ENEMIES,
as well as best selling co-author of the DOWN TO EARTH series.

More About the Author

Conroe wrote his first readable novel, God Touched, right after finishing his daughter's copy of Twilight and muttering: "Vampires don't farging sparkle!"

With six more books in the series and a stand alone novel (Black Frost), he doesn't seem to be slowing down. He cut his reading teeth on the likes of Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, JRR Tolkien, Robert Heinlein, Andre Norton, and H. Beam Piper.

Financial professional by day and author by night (actually by morning), he bangs out his stories with fingers that are usually sore from forge burns or getting beat up at the dojo.

Interesting characters and fast paced action.

I felt the personality of the characters and that added a lot to the story as you feel them as people.

Not affiliated with the author and I do have a lot of other reviews so this is not a plug. This book is about Chris a unique man with a one of a kind gift to exorcise demons, in this universe demons can inhabit people and push out their souls. Chris eventually comes into contact with other supernatural species "angels, weres, vampires, demons, native spirits and a whole host of others" and meets his soul mate as well as grows in power and perspective. If you are wondering about the title and like me am not a fan of christian fiction I will say this book does have the Christian mythos with angels and demons but also includes all the other religions as well in a non monotheistic way. Basically you will not feel this is a preachy book as that makes up only one dimension of the story and is not the whole story one of my favorite characters is the bear who is a native spirit.

Good
1: The writing is mature with few errors I found that it flowed well and that the word usage was both easy to follow and engaging.
2: The dialogue felt organic and real I could see people saying those things in real life and it made for good character development.
3: The characters themselves are well developed and 3 dimensional they all have separate wants and needs they all have their own take on the world and whats in it. I felt the personality of the characters and that added a lot to the story as you feel them as people.
4: The world was well detailed and was fleshed out as the story progressed. This means no big info dumps instead you are introduced to the world in a natural organic way this helps you make sense of it as the character does and again makes the immersion into the world effortless.

The title of my review really says it all. It's tough for a dude to find some decent urban fantasy novels these days that aren't full of sickly sweet girlishness. Nothing wrong with that if you're a 15 year old girl, but for a grown guy who likes books that kick @**, there's not much to be had...

That's why I'm glad I happened across this series. While the books suffer from the usual indie drawbacks (poor formatting and the occasional typo) it's worth overlooking for getting to a darn good read. The first book (this one) takes a while to get revved up, but the second one grabs you by the throat and stays at full-throttle the whole time.

If you like urban fantasy that is all about action and not so much about two star-crossed-something-or-others making gooey eyes at each other, you'll like this book and the rest in the series.

I seldom create reviews so bear with me. I have read all 4 currently released novels in this series.

I give this freshman work 5 stars. It is well worth a read by anyone interested in a good tale. Especially, but not limited to, the urban fantasy genre.

Pros:
* The pacing is very good for this novel. There is a ton of world building that has to happen to introduce you to the protagonists life. Details are doled out at a rapid clip and push the story at a fast clip.
* Hook - Very quickly you will care about the protagonist. The story definitely pulls you into his world and has you rooting for him.
* Writing - I enjoyed the writing style. A little humor, and a lot of details. Delves into the "science" of the genre in an interesting and easy to understand fashion without killing the pacing.
* Story - Details come out fairly regularly and move the story along. The story itself gets pushed to the back a little in this debut novel as we get to know the characters. Still present and makes sense.
* Price - This story is priced at a debut Author price.

Cons:
* Minor editing flaws - There are a couple of misspelled words that should have been caught in editing. "The" instead of "Them". Very minor, easy to catch the meaning and don't detract from the story. Is it possible these are kindle only issues?
* Some ideas could have been fleshed out a little more. You won't believe how quickly the novel flies by.

Basically its a very good book. Hard to put down and leaves you wanting more. Luckily there are 3 other novels in the series already released, so you can get your Demon Accord fix.

Side notes:
If you enjoy authors like Jim Butcher or Patricia Briggs, consider this series required reading. (Not because it adds to those Authors series in any way, instead it is because you will thank me later).

This is the 1st book in a series that isn't terrible at first but the main character quickly becomes so powerful there's simply no challenge to him, ever.

The author simply explains, repeatedly, how awesome the main character is. It's like a roller coaster of a ride but instead of action at the apex, it's simply "Look how awesome this character is!" and then there's some downtime while his beyond-gorgeous vampire girlfriend gushes over him, then it's back to "Wow! Look how awesome the main character is!"

It's boring because there's simply nothing to challenge the main character. At all. When something gets close to challenging him, he simply discovers he has a new ability and uses that, if it's easier. Such as 300 werewolves attacking his friends. He simply, in less than a second, turns them all into ash, without hurting the werewolves and vampires that are going toe-to-toe with those 300 werewolves... Just discovers this new power because, you know, he needed it.

It's like reading a book about Superman but there are no supervillains. Only this guy is way more powerful than Superman and has a god bear as his buddy who can instantly 1 shot elder vampires, the strongest things in the world besides the main characters. And this god bear can instantly locate anyone on the planet and teleport to them and destroy areas in a way similar to a nuclear bomb. So if the president of the US is holed up in his bunker, the bear can teleport to him instantly, ignore bullets from the secret service, and scare the president into doing what the main character wants. And yes, the bear does exactly this at one point, albeit it is in the 2nd book.
