A Giant of the Faith Shares His Heart,

This review is from: God Transcendent (Paperback)
Dr. J. Gresham Machen was one of the true giants of 20th century Christianity. His brilliant defense of traditional, Reformed orthodoxy in the face of ever more vicious attacks was the stuff of legend. His "The Virgin Birth of Christ" is still the finest apologetic for this controversial point of Christian truth, and his cogent polemic "Christianity and Liberalism" is more pertinent now than when he wrote it in 1923. He was a superb scholar and his Greek text ("New Testament Greek for Beginners") is still in use at many seminaries. "God Transcendent" is a collection of 20 sermons by Dr. Machen. Most of them were never intended for publication. In them the warrior shares his heart. They are sermons of unusual clarity, power, and wisdom. Dr. Machen considered himself first and foremost a herald of God's Word and that is never more obvious than in these wonderful sermons. The final four sermons were preached on the last four Sunday's of Dr. Machen's life - indeed the last sermon ("The Bible and the Cross") was preached only five days before he died on January 1st, 1937. I highly recommend these sermons to anyone as devotional material of rare depth and substance. Our shallow age needs such preaching more than ever, and you will find Dr. Machen as current as tomorrow's newspaper.

The Strange Condescension of God,
By
This review is from: God Transcendent (Paperback)
is God's revelation of truth and His Will through His written word. What is religion devoid of this strange condescension? To be a man made structure. Religion may well be a tool to form society, to form a community, to give obedience to an earthly government. It may well be used to foster a man made philosophy of morals, to be psychologically beneficial, and to make sense of the World. This is not the claim made in the Bible. It certainly is not the claim of the author of these sermons. J. Gresham Machen saw a great threat to the Christian community, but more important to the spiritual destination of those who listen to a distorted theology of God's Word. He accepted the Bible as the Word of God: That there is one truth and that truth is revealed in the Bible. This book published in 1949 after the death of Dr. Machen. It is a presentation of twenty of his sermons previously not published. Biblical truth is contained in this work. What does it mean to serve the One true God and not the notions of man? What is Sin, what are the wages of Sin? What the difference between the Brotherhood of Christ is as described in the Bible and those taught in most seminaries? How does love have a constraint on us? How is the Christian dead with Christ? How to distinguish between a true Prophet of God and a false one? How Jesus is not just a mere example but a Prophet, Priest and King? What is the doctrine of the atonement?A man who started his own Theological Seminary because he could not in good conscience teaches among the unbelieving instructors at Princeton University. These sermons are an argument against Modernistic Liberal Theology

The same, yesterday, today and tomorrow,

This review is from: God Transcendent (Paperback)
The sermons in "God Transcendent" were delivered by Dr. Machen during the 1920s and the 1930s. What is so amazing is that these sermons are just as "fresh" today as they were more that five decades ago. Much of Dr. Machen's writings and sermons were focused on combating the "liberalism" that always threatens to destroy the church. Dr Machen was a staunch advocate of Biblical truth. His sermons focus on the meaning of sin and its consequences; the good fight of faith; true and false prophets; love and God's gift to us.This book is small enough to be carried daily and read devotionally. It is filled with great reminders of God's transcendence and the great sacrifice God made in order to redeem fallen mankind.
