great way to understand the flow of Matthew, June 17, 2011
D.A. Carson's Commentary on Matthew in The Expositor's Bible Commentary set is a classic - the best commentary I read on Matthew - and his book on the Sermon on the Mount is exceptional, so when I bought "God With Us" I figured it would be good. It is! The entire book is only 12 chapters long (164 pages) - chapter 1 covers Matthew 1 and 2 in just 12 pages. A whole chapter is given to the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7) and a whole chapter just to Matthew 13. Needless to say, he doesn't attempt to cover everything that could be said or delve into various views like he does in his commentary. Nevertheless, the book feels complete and was a pleasure to read. The intro to the book states its purpose well ". . . [Matthew] is more than a patchwork quilt of stories and discourses, loosely connected. There are themes that flow through its pages, connecting section after section. . . it lays the framework for Christian mission throughout the ages, and cries out to be studied and obeyed that the purpose of Christ's coming may be accomplished in us."
I think "God With Us" would be a great book for small groups to use. The writing style is reader friendly (comparable to his book on the Sermon on the Mount), the pages are filled with application and thought provoking comments, it focuses on major ideas in Matthew (something that many people miss in more detailed studies), and each chapter ends with about 6 questions for further study. In a small group you could get by reading the chapter and just answering the questions.
If you want an in-depth, verse by verse commentary on Matthew, go with Expositors (vol 9) by Carson, but if you want a resource for small group studies, or something for people who want to learn about the Book of Matthew but aren't interested in technical arguments or references to the original languages, this is a great book. I like it because it has depth, leaves a spiritual imprint, and yet it is simply written. I'm thinking of using it as an outline for doing a mini-series in Matthew on Sunday mornings at church.
The best thing about Carson is that he is both a scholar and has a high view of Scripture (he believes the Bible is the Word of God and without error). That in itself gives me confidence in the book even if I hadn't read it.
