More About the Author

In just under two decades of writing, Max Lucado has accomplished more than most writers hope for in a lifetime. Most of his books have appeared on one or more best seller lists, including those published by the "New York Times," "USA Today," "Publishers Weekly," and the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA). Aside from hardcover books, Lucado's writings have also been published as children's books, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, music CDs, mass paperback booklets, apparel, giftware, bookmarks, calendars, study Bibles, workbooks, curricula, and plush products. In spring 2003, Hallmark/Dayspring Cards launched a new gift card line featuring excerpts from Lucado's writings--and has already sold more than one million cards.

All this success has drawn more than a little attention to a previously low-profile Texas author and minister. Lucado has been featured in a wide range of media, including "USA Today," "Larry King Live," and "NBC Nightly News." He has spoken at the National Prayer Breakfast before the President of the United States. He has traveled with internationally renowned musicians as a special speaker on their music tours, such as the highly successful "Come Together & Worship Tour" (sponsored by Chevrolet) with Grammy Award-winning artists Michael W. Smith and Third Day.

Journey to the Top
Lucado was born in 1955 in San Angelo, Texas, and raised in Andrews, Texas, the youngest of four children. His father was an Exxon oil field mechanic who, Lucado remembers, always smelled of grease cleaner. "It makes it easy for me to see a God who is loving and kind--because my dad was," he says. His mother was a nurse who grew up working in the cotton fields.

Lucado went through a period of rebellion against his parents' values and their God during his teens and into college. But it wasn't long before he found himself drawn back to his roots, back to God. He married, spent time serving as a missionary in Brazil, and returned to the States, where he began working as a church minister and writing on the side.

Secret to Success
From all accounts, Max Lucado is not a man consumed by sales, awards, and achievements. He often turns down media interviews since they impede on family and ministry commitments. He spends the bulk of his week serving as senior minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. And he is truly surprised by his own success--more impressed by his one-in-a-million wife and three amazing daughters than by his successful writing career.

Bestselling storyteller Max Lucado has written a lovely gift book full of heartwarming and heartrending stories from folks he has come to know over the years. Lucado's work is always full of encouragement and gentle nudges to make changes most people would rather push to the back burner than bring front and center to be faced. Yet Lucado's fine ability to communicate the biblical reasons why Christians must face their problems, attitudes, weaknesses and sins head-on is why fans will submit to his suggestions even when they would rather not.

Throughout this lovely, hardbound book, Lucado weaves the story of Joseph's early and young adult life when he was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, imprisoned wrongly, forgotten when he should have been remembered, and then finally, after many long years, was placed as second in command in Egypt. As the Bible tells readers, Joseph was a man who honored God in his actions and his thoughts throughout his years of suffering. When it was in his power to destroy the very same brothers who altered his life forever, Joseph again did the God-honoring thing and forgave them all. In fact, Joseph not only forgave his brothers, he richly provided for them and their families for the rest of their lives. The lesson here, writes Lucado, is that no matter how, where, why, or for how long we suffer, it is in our power to do the right thing.

It is this lesson that Lucado focuses upon as he shares numerous real-life stories of people who, like Joseph, have been pushed to the brink of despair and discouragement but chosen to trust God in the darkest moments of their existence. Lucado reminds readers over and over that in "God's hands, intended evil becomes ultimate good.

If you need serious, academic theology, this is not for you: head for CS Lewis or GK Chesterton. This is for those long days and nights in the hospital or in between testing days or in between chemo treatments.

Lucado weaves scripture in with his trademark casual Bible storytelling and real stories from struggling people.

I read a little every day in between my surgeries and prep for chemotherapy. Along with other devotional books, bible gateway.com, and the prayers of family, friends and church, this little book helped me stay relatively sane so I could understand my doctors and nurses.

This book shows that we are not alone through the trials and tribulations of life. God is with us just like he was with Joseph. He does not let us down and we grow through the experiences we go through.

I ordered this book when I was going through a hard time. It helped me so much to realize my life was not over, and God is always there to help me through any difficulties I may have. I still read it as a reminder that nothing is too hard to handle with God's help. I also ordered a copy for a friend's husband who was going through some work difficulties - I hope it helped him too.

I bought this book looking for some comfort from the death of a loved one. I did find it. I always do with Lucado's writings. I would have liked a bit more in the book on dealing with death, but still an excellent book from a story teller that can bring biblical stories to life and relate them to common situations in life that we all experience. Max has a gift of . Words and knowledge of the Bible that is beyond any author that I have read and I have read many.

Lucado never disappoints in his writing from the heart. Scripture supported with thought provoking reading to gain insight for one to learn to trust more deeply without having one think God is fairy granting to the easy pass thru life.

As any if the books I have read by Max I always know I will finish it knowing our Sweet Lord just a little bit more. This one really touched me reading about what struggles others have had, we can learn so much about God through others.
