5.0 out of 5 stars This book began my healing from abuse
I was in an emotionally abusive relationship but didn't know it. And as a man, it made it harder for me because men aren't very likely to be seen as victims of abuse. So I was confused, disoriented to the max, and didn't have a clue about who to turn to or what to do. And even though I am a devout Christian, just my belief in God was not enough by itself to show me...

2.0 out of 5 stars It's all about NETWORKING
This book is a major disappointment. Throughout the book the writer's suggestions are basically to tell enough people about what your needs are so that someone can help you. There are a few examples of supernatural intervention, however, the main idea is to help God help you. I needed more that than simplistic approach to everything this book has to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book began my healing from abuse, June 29, 2006
I was in an emotionally abusive relationship but didn't know it. And as a man, it made it harder for me because men aren't very likely to be seen as victims of abuse. So I was confused, disoriented to the max, and didn't have a clue about who to turn to or what to do. And even though I am a devout Christian, just my belief in God was not enough by itself to show me what I could not see in front of me. I also believe that God designed us so that we need to be in relationship with each other, helping each other and that He does a bulk of His work through others.

So one day I was scanning the radio dial for help and came across Dr. Townsend's radio counseling show. Then I heard them mention their book, "What To Do When You Don't Know What To Do" That's the ONLY thing that I knew to do, so I called up and ordered it.

It's simple, maybe simplistic, yes. It asks you to rely on God, yes. But for me, at that moment, all I could grasp was something simple. And if for some reason you're opposed to God or relying on Him (but why would you???), then you could still glean the messages from it which are still valid on practical levels.

The part of the book that when I got to, threw a lifeline to me was the part that said, "If you don't know what to do, get more information". A light bulb went off and I knew that a great part of my paralysis to any movement forward to healing was because I just plain didn't know anything about what I was feeling. That little step was just the key and then I began researching like crazy on the internet and slowly, albeit reluctantly, I began to understand what my condition was and how it had been created. Of course, that led to what to do about it, also.

But truly, sometimes - maybe often - we just don't have a clue about ourselves, our situation, others, or what we're feeling or experiencing. This book is for those times. At those times we need a simplistic approach - a very basic approach. That's why this book was a life saver to me and probably to many others. And again, if you've got a thing against God, or even having God in your life, then why even write a review?

This book is titled very correctly. It's not for those like the reviewers below who have an idea about what they think they need and how that should look and sound. It's for those of us who truly are at a loss as to where to even begin. This was a miraculous book in a simple, little book's clothing.

Finally a book that teaches the difference between wanting something more and getting something more. Very clear explanation on how to forgive but not be a doormat. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a Way, December 11, 2002

There is a way - sometimes not what we expect. Why is it we turn to God as only a "last resort"?! This book is so practical and fresh. It should be very helpful - and hopeful - to all of us who lose our way from time to time. A great thought-provoking book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing!, June 3, 2006
This review is from: God Will Make a Way: What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do (Hardcover)
I was saddened to see a few negative reviews of this book. One or two were so negative it was obvious the reviewers still hadn't found any help or healing. I for one found this book to be a lifesaver during a crisis in my life. I had been dealing (not well) with feelings of hopelessness and great personal dissapointments and even considering divorce when I discovered this book. Yes, it is a Christian book - and personal faith in God is the cornerstone of what is presented here. But truth is truth, and I can attest only to the fact that the truth presented here changed my life and gave me hope when I had none. It also explained so much of what I was experiencing and gave me logical steps to follow to become healthy. I am very grateful to both of these authors and now own several of their books. I cannot recommend this book enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book, June 24, 2004
I am a big fan of the Cloud/Townsend books and pretty much buy one sight unseen, as I did this one. While for me it is not quite at the level of How People Grow it was still very helpful.

For these authors, relationships with other people are key to growth. In How People Grow the author describes feeling like it was God's "plan B" to have people help him--that God really should do it directly and he was getting 2nd best. He later came to realize that people are God's "plan A". So I don't think it is a case of "tell lots of people about your problem", but rather an acknowledgement that the Body of Christ is called that for a reason: that God uses His people as vehicles for His love.

Anyway, that is just one part of this book. In general I found it very useful to have all the principles of growth broken down in this way and then have applications to specific life situations in the 2nd half of the book. These authors are very practical, which I like.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book, August 13, 2004
This book talks about the struggles that some of us may face and how important it is to turn to God to help us overcome some of these difficulties. They talk about applying certain principles to areas of life such as divorce, addiction, weight, abuse, depression, and parenting.

The 8 principles mentioned in this book for facing our problems were helpful, particularly choosing a travel companions wisely, leave your luggage behind, owning your problems, and beginning your journey with God. Sometimes, I felt that they blamed certain problems that people have on "not trusting God enough" or "not being in a strong enough relationship with God". That may be true to a certain extent. However, sometimes we can have all the faith in the world, and yet, we can still struggle with weight, depression, etc.

But the authors didn't just stop at the "you must have faith in God" reasoning. Making God a priority is important to overcoming difficulties. But sometimes, putting your faith in action and doing certain things to help yourself is also very important.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helps provide directions on your way, May 22, 2004
By A Customer
This book is wonderful. It hits on everything from depression, fear, loneliness and all the other heartaches in between. It does a great job of hitting solid points from a professional point of view and still is Christian based. They don't blame everything away on science, but instead of human feelings and tendencies. It has taken me alittle longer to read than most, but the chapters are very informative and very helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful or not? Depends, May 19, 2007
I can understand why the previous reviewers shared very diverse opinion of the book. The supporters focused on how well the authors made use of their professional knowledge and writting skill to discuss eight godly principles on solving twelve key areas of life's problem. The opposers primarily complained that it's too shallow and did not help at all. IMHO, this book did point to the direction of help or even salvation, which is God. Those who know God well and just need a little advice or hint will find the book useful. However, it is not the solution itself and so those who want a shortcut and without a solid faith are disappointed for sure. Nevertheless, as a believer in Christ and a book lover, I am obliged to comment that it is a relatively good book of its kind. Recommended!

I find this book so helpful, so well written and insightful into the challenges that life presents us in all its many facets, that I have bought it and had it shipped to my children and two other persons. The book covers a myriad of situations in life. I recommend it to anybody and everybody highly.
