5.0 out of 5 stars thorough, readable, insightful, often beautiful, well done, December 11, 2008
This review is from: God the Worker: Journeys into the Mind, Heart and Imagination of God (Paperback)
(This book review was written with S. Patton.)

Robert Banks, in his book God the Worker, presents a set of Biblical images that reveal the character of God through the lens of human occupation and creativity. Although these images are less commonly used today, Banks shows that they are just as important to helping us relate to God as more traditional images such as liberator, redeemer, lover, and friend. For example, in the discussion of God as Tentmaker and Camper, God is revealed as creator, restorer, and stretcher of life. We see His care for detail and quality, his command for us to imitate, and as his creations, earth's temporariness and our design for mobility to be constantly moving toward His goals. By revealing the character of God through this colorful set of imagery, Banks demonstrates how God becomes an increasingly tangible part of human experience, no matter where we are in time.

From Genesis we read the powerful statement that God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created them. In God the Worker this statement takes on new meaning as Banks portrays God as a creative being--a composer, a metalworker, and an architect--who engages His people in a way of life that is distinctly God-seeking and following. At the center of this process lies our ability to imagine, and to interpret our experiences in unique and personal ways. Banks uses images and metaphors from the Bible, along with movies, music, poetry and other literature, to demonstrate how God is ultimately at the very center of our imagination, and therefore present in everything we do. By learning to recognize God in this way, we can better understand how we have been called to work and create according to His blessing, and to fulfill His purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars About This Book, September 18, 2008
This review is from: God the Worker: Journeys into the Mind, Heart and Imagination of God (Paperback)
"Here is an invitation to embark on a journey of discovery that marshals our imagination and emotions, our intellect and will. God the Worker seeks to answer the ultimate questions: - What is God really like? Can we know God intimately? Where do we fit into the overall scheme of things?

In his quest for answers, Robert Banks opens up the world of the Bible and everyday life as he explores dynamic images of God at work: as composer and performer, as metalworker and potter, as garment-maker and dresser, as gardener and orchardist, as tentmaker and camper....He shows how, through the language and idea of work, the divine hand is revealed.

This book offers us the opportunity to encounter God in a way that is mind-expanding, life-changing, work-transforming -- taking us to the very edgews of human understanding."
