Editorial Reviews

GOD IN AMERICA a six-hour documentary series from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and FRONTLINE targeted to air in fall 2010 on PBS will tell the sweeping and dramatic story of religious life in America examining more than 500 years of American religious history from the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the 2008 presidential election. GOD IN AMERICA will examine this history as it has played out in public life exploring the complex interaction between religion and democracy in the United States; the origins of the American concept of religious liberty; the dynamics of the ever-evolving American religious marketplace; and the vital role played by religious ideas and institutions in many social reform movements in the country's history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent documentary February 21, 2011
One of the best documentaries on religion and America I've seen. It is not a comprehensive exposé of all religions started or practiced in America (which would be impossible and overwhelming), but instead a story of how religion has shaped life and politics in America from the Puritans all the way up to Billy Graham, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. I think PBS struck the perfect balance in providing a factual introduction to many mainstream groups as well as telling a cohesive story throughout this extensive time period.

It is unfortunate that some major religions were not included (i.e., Mormonism) but understandable as PBS has put out a full-length documentary specifically on this topic. You can watch both "God in America" and "The Mormons" for free on the PBS website.

5.0 out of 5 stars HIstory we never learned in school January 13, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Impressed with how important Religion in Early America made our Constitutional laws and how the founding fathers wanted to create a new experiment by these laws. A new & fresh look at US History.
Also, how much the same rhetoric is repeated in the political debates whether it is 1600 or 2010!
Religion is a very big issue in Democracy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction December 16, 2010
A previous "one-star" review seemed harsh, because I'm pretty sure that this series was meant to be an enjoyable introduction to the subject at hand. As such I was very impressed. They used quality actors that many may recognize from other TV shows. And in spite of the specs I saw advertised, it's actually presented in anamorphic widescreen with 5.1 surround sound for anyone interested. If you have HDTV and an upconvert DVD player, it's amazing!

So often historical study separates the religious from the secular. But ignoring the religious convictions of a people which underlies the political forces that shapes that people will always leave great gaps in purely secular history. What is lacking in a secular approach is remedied in this American history. The political movements of the pre-revolutionary days through the moral questions that so often divide us into liberal and conservative camps have little meaning without the context of the common faith experiences that have shaped those movements. Few other nations have been influenced by religious culture as has the United States. In this series, PBS has given us the continuity of that religious experience from the earliest European settlements to the present day. A fascinating study of how faith has shaped politics in ways we seldom realize or wish to acknowledge. Very well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Revelation March 16, 2013
I have to guess that even for those who have been fans of Lincoln like me for some time, episode 3 was a revelation. It deepened my appreciation of not only his character, but the struggles we have faced, overcome, yet continue in many ways to confront as a nation.

The recent Spielberg film with Day-Lewis is excellent of course, but delves nowhere near the depth of spiritual struggle depicted here through dramatization of Lincoln's personal writings during the Civil War. He seems to have truly wrestled with his conception of God and the right course during his presidency.

Such struggles and choices are never certain, and although I know it sounds somewhat negative, I would hope that more of us suffer and make our choices under the same sharpening pressures, only to be later judged, no matter the intervening period, anywhere near the level of acclaim that he ultimately achieved.

Because that seems as close as I can see to any true measure of greatness. And we will always need more of us to pursue that level of commitment, whether greatness is achieved, acclaimed, denied or even just ignored.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good outline of our American religious experience January 18, 2013

Well done. The reinactments tend to get in the way, but for the most it's a pretty good overview, although at times, a little thin on the information.

An excellent resource. This helps place the growth of Christianity into the context of the growth of America. Resource materials are also available online to help provide guidance for group discussions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review of the documentary "God in America" February 10, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
It seemed to start out okay, but around the midpoint, the program really strayed from my concept of God in America to other "social" concerns which I associate more with politics than with God.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not exciting
As a documentary, it was good. The information was accurate. Compelling photography and costuming, just not very attention-grabbing. I found myself nodding off.
