Book Description

1973
First published in 1972, Vine Deloria Jr.'s God Is Red remains the seminal work on Native religious views, asking new questions about our species and our ultimate fate. Celebrating 3 decades in publication with a special 30th-anniversary edition, this classic work reminds us to learn ''that we are a part of nature, not a transcendent species with no responsibilities to the natural world.'' It is time again to listen to Vine Deloria Jr.'s powerful voice, telling us about religious life that is independent from Christianity and that reveres the interconnectedness of all living things.

3.0 out of 5 stars I respect this book, but cannot embrace it., November 2, 2009

This review is from: God is red (Hardcover)
To be fair, I did not finish this book in its whole, for a number of reasons.

I think the book covers some very important topics that have been largely unheard by many people until this book's release. At the same time, it focuses so much on the unfairness and misunderstandings, that it does not seem to talk about modern day indians and their beliefs too much, thus almost contributing to the problem in a sense.

The writing was calm, intelligent, and collected at first glance, but over time it seemed that there was an underlying anger in the author's writing, and an anger that is completely understandable, but not an anger I want to feel whenever I read a book.

This book pointed out all of the problems of everything in the political and social atmosphere between the Indians and everyone else in 1972. It seemed to not go much further than that.

It seems that the author was trying to be far too intellectual. Writing about an important subject, but still wary of his image.

I respect this book, but I cannot embrace it.
