Editorial Reviews

Los Angeles based Joy Jones grew up singing in church and then sparked an interest in spoken word and song writing. Years down the line, she relocated to London and was awestruck by how many individuals were making a living from their creativity. During that time, she had met and maintained a relationship with Bugz in the Attic and was mentored by Daz-I-Kue. 'Daz believed in me, and encouraged me to really cultivate my craft and create a full project.' Different experiences with a variety of musical styles including gospel, soca, classical, African choral music, soul, and jazz have a strong influence on Joy s debut album Godchild. One of the many big tunes featured on the record is a Daz-I-Kue remix of The Joy which is a heavy foot stomping afro rhythm anthem. More on the cosmic space tip are tracks like Hollywood, Promise Land, and Supernova, which feels like PPP, Sa-Ra, or Sy Smith. Joy also shows off her ability to go beyond the dancefloors and put her heart into the smooth joints like Beautiful and Glass Boxes. Be prepared to have your ears and mind opened to new experiences!

5.0 out of 5 stars I was floored... August 3, 2010
Format:MP3 Music
I was floored when i first heard this album. i can compare this feeling to the first time i heard lauren hill's miseducation or jill scott's 1st album. The range of styles she brought to the album, the arrangements, the simplicity and honesty of the lyrics... it is neo soul in the truest sense of the the word: a reinvention of soul music (unlike merely sounding like 'neo-soul' from the 90's). I'm disappointed that the record didn't receive the buzz it deserves (why?) and further disappointed that she isn't going on tour in support of it (double why??). Hopefully in the year where ms. baduh's new album is widely received (it's only ok) and neo-soul has a new IT girl (janelle morae, overhyped, inmyopinion), people would somehow, magically, discover this lost gem from a distant year, 2009. And on behalf of the rest of us who were lucky to have enjoyed it (or still), ms. jones, i thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Godchild April 25, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I heard about Joy Jones on a music site and admit that the eye-catching cover art piqued my interest in hearing more music from her. Joy is one of many soulful singers who are going the independent route to get their music heard. Initially as I listened to her album her voice reminded me of Erykah Badu & Sy Smith but the more I listened her individual vocals shined through. This is a well produced debut featuring strong lyrics and melodic beats that don't rely on hip hop to sell the soul singer.

My favorite tracks:

SUPERNOVA - trippy, melodic arrangement

THE JOY - great dance mix of a fun upbeat track

RIGHT NOW - beautifully stripped down track

GLASS BOXES - strong lyrics about striving for exterior perfection

HOLLYWOOD - interesting musical arrangement

OVER - great use of auto tune

BEAUTIFUL - another strong lyrical track about how beautiful people are naturally without starving themselves to conform and without using plastic surgery

All in all, I'm glad I made this purchase - it's a very interesting collection of songs that doesn't sound like any other r&b music out today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Godchild April 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Godchild is one of those rare, amazing albums that defines musical artistry and creativity. Joy showcases a great talent and voice here. The songs hit hard with thought provoking messages and do not cling to the usual Rhythm and Blues cliches. Her range is wide, and the musical variety keeps the album fresh and interesting throughout, with loads of replay value. A definite classic and worthwhile purchase. I am without a doubt looking forward to the next Joy Jones release.
