I just purchased The Goddess Diet, The Menopause Diet and The Menopause Diet: Mini Meal Cookbook. While Dr. Gillespie's message is important, clear and useful,(and I will be using her recommendations to help with my thyroid treatments) I was disconcerted to find out that these three books essentially were identical, down to some of the chapters---verbatim! I highly recommend getting only ONE of these books; either the Menopause Diet or Goddess Diet book (whichever is more appropriate for you), and skipping the Mini Meal Cookbook (85% of the recipes are in the previously mentioned books).

5.0 out of 5 stars No need to starve to lose weight!, December 28, 2000
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
I purchased The Menopause Diet book for my mother and The Goddess Diet for myself and can't believe how different I feel after following the information in this book. I've already lost 14 pounds in 2 months...something impossible for a woman with hypothyroidism. I feel like a new person! My mother went to her doctor, changed the type of estrogen she was taking, and now has a normal cholesterol level and has lost her "Buddha Belly." She teases me that she can shop from my closet. Although both books contain a lot of the same information ( after all...some women are afraid of the word "menopause") just select the one that suites your age range or needs. If you are on hormone therapy, the chapter in The Menopause Diet is worth the book alone. Even my mother's family doctor read it and said it made a lot of sense. Now I not only feel but LOOK like a goddess, all by choosing foods that harmonize with my hormones. I finally got it....to lose weight you need to EAT, not skip meals...and just add a bit of exercise to your daily routine. THANK YOU for doing so much for women! I've ordered The Gladiator Diet for my boyfriend because he could stand to lose that "Buddha Belly". Who knew his enlarging waistline was increasing his risk for impotency and diabetes even at his age? I plan to keep him healthy like me by following the great information in Larrian's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new way to think about dieting!, January 11, 2000
By
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
I have struggled with my weight and figure for my whole life. I've tried numerous low-fat diets with very little success. Then I read Larrian Gillespie's The Goddess Diet, and not only is she humorous and witty, but the new way to eat really works! I lost 10 lbs this month alone. And I don't feel the constant hunger and cravings I usually get when I'm on a diet. I feel better about my figure than I have in a long time. I highly recommend all women read this book, because it's especially designed for women, by a woman. I'm confident Larrian Gillespie's Goddess Diet with help me keep it off!

5.0 out of 5 stars A way of eating that makes the most sense for women, April 18, 2000
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
Larrian Gillespie's book The Goddess Diet explains, in lay terms, the reason most diets don't work for women, why stress makes us fat, and how hormones are directly affected by our diet. I lost 4 lbs. my first week with Goddess Diet. I look forward to seeing how my PMS will fare, on a higher protein/low glycemic carbohydrate way of eating. The plan suggests mini-meals as a way of keeping blood sugar levels stable. I am never hungry!

Her website, www.goddessdiet.com is also a lot of fun. It is slowly gaining new members, and the author responds to individual inquiries when she can.

This is an excellent book and resource sure to catch fire in the world of women's health!

5.0 out of 5 stars Climbing out of the abyss!, April 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
As a women trying to overcome not only weight issues, but thyroid disease and surgical menopause as well, the climb out of the abyss is incredibly difficult! This is truly the first book to offer solutions and support for all of these conditions. Dr. Larrian Gillespie offers a unique and inspiring perspective to women in regards to health unlike anything that I have previously read. Her program for normalizing weight is simple and kind to the body! We no longer have to starve or waste endless hours exercising. In fact, Dr. Gillespie's mantra is to release our former obsession with stringent programs designed for mens bodies and to rediscover a passion for health and an enjoyment of food, we as women, have long lost. But make no mistake, for those of us needing easy to follow guidelines, they are there. At the heart of Dr. Gillespie's message, is that hidden in all women is a healthy, slim, energetic Goddess, just waiting to be released! She provides the path, and is willing to take the walk with us!

1.0 out of 5 stars what a disappointment, July 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
one reviewer said that an average stay-at-home mom would not find this book useful. so how about a single, professional, busy woman like myself trying to follow advice given by the author? no way. first of all, larrian gillespie gives you recipes designed for four, six, eight, twelve people... there are several recipes for two, but most can't really be divided in a clear-cut way. so if you're a single person, then this book is not for you - unless you have loads of time and love to cook and play around with recipies.i consider it a waste of time and a bore, so i just want a simple recipe, which does not require a trip across town to shop for kumquats (gillespie has her own tree and so we're given a recipe for a kumquat dish).

one annoying thing is that the author tells us to buy very specific brands of foods and spices; she even provides addresses of companies that sell them. perhaps some readers will appreciate it, but to me it seems daunting. is the "regular" tomato from a supermarket only a poor substitute for the "xyz" tomato the author recommends? i really don't want to spend time thinking about that. readers from outside the u.s. will be annoyed by this.

how i wish somebody would finally come up with recipes for dishes that can be tossed together using the most basic ingredients (one tomato, half a cucumber, 3 oz. smoked turkey, a pear, etc.) and that can be easily scaled down for one.

apart from the culinary instructions, gillespie also gives us advice, which may be perfectly good and well-meaning, but is utterly impractical. she tells us that "a goddess" gets herself to bed by nine p.m. ha! just trying to follow the goddess recipes would keep me up well past that hour. and what about you, busy moms? does 9 p.m. seem realistic to you? i think that if you're not already a goddess with loads of free time, no obligations and a keen interest in studying labels (ugh....)on everything you touch - this book won't make you one.

gillespie also tells us to pray during walks. oh, well, i'm throwing out the recipes, perhaps i'll stick to prayers...

5.0 out of 5 stars The book for ALL Adult women NEED..., October 12, 2000
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
I have struggled for 10 years with Low Energy, Weight Gain in spite of careful eating.... This book explains it all & how to combat it. Wonderfully upbeat, simple clear descriptions on the "How & Why" our bodies are betraying us. I was doing all the things the AMA recommened, to no avail. Now at 50 I have some real hope, I've just started but can already tell my energy level is much better, no afternoon sleepiness. My family (2 Men) are very impressed with the recipes I've tried from this book too! Slainte` (to your health)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Goddess Diet changed my life, September 23, 2000
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading the Goddess book and the diet is unbelievable!! I have only been on it for two weeks and I feel like a new person. I am losing inches all over my body. The best thing--the bloating is gone and I am never hungry anymore. The mini meal concept is so great for me. I highly recommend this as a way of life for everyone interested in healthy eating and losing weight and balancing insulin and blood sugar.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breakthrough book for all women, March 13, 2000
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
The Goddess Diet is a breakthrough book for all women who want to lose weight and keep it off. As the founder and editor of Pinksunrise, a popular online women's health magazine and support group, which focuses on topics like perimenopause and menopause, I had the tremendous opportunity to interview Dr. Gillespie. Her book The Goddess Diet is not a fad but a real way of life. After extensively studying the way women's bodies use food, Dr. Gillespie formulated a way for women to eat well, lose weight, and stay healthy. I strongly counsel the members of my online health support groups, who want to lose weight, to treat themselves as goddesses and listen to Dr. Gillespie. This is the surest way to safely lose weight, keep it off and feel great! Thank you Dr. Gillespie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for whiners, December 5, 2001
By
This review is from: The Goddess Diet (Paperback)
I have hypothyroidism and found this book the most informative and useful for my condition. I lost 25 pounds following the guidelines AND I learned why the things my doctor told me about my metabolism were all wrong. I find the recipes easy to follow and like the freedom of this type of plan, which is more concerned about variety than regimentation. You have to PLAN to lose weight because it doesn't just happen. If you are whiner, you can find a LOT of excuses not to follow this diet style. I am a busy, working mother of two and I find time to prepare great meals for all my family AND get in some exercise. This book will help you understand why your hormones DO dictate your weight and how to eat so as to stimulate your metabolism. I found the chapter on hormone metabolism especially useful, since it shows why carbohydrates in excess of 40% shift our metabolism of estrogen into the cancer stimulating path. I now look and feel like a goddess and my husband agrees. Don't listen to those who want a magic pill to change their life. Take control for yourself and follow this plan.
