Intense greatness,

This review is from: Goddess (Audio CD)
I've been listening to "Goddess" since it came out (not continuously of course) and have to say that it stands very much at the top of Emm's oeuvre. She is an absolutely superb singer and she writes real, melodic music. I've always found her lyrics to be somewhat obscurant but that's part of the poetry of her work. A singer/songwriter doesn't have to shed tears in the marketplace. This disc deserves at *least* a listen from anyone who likes good music, from the tinkly open of "Let It Snow" to the soaring vocals in "Die Evergreen" to the elegiac resignation of "Note 2 Self," there is beautiful music to be enjoyed. I find it a signal mark of Emm's music to hear cellos used as perfectly as imaginable in modern music (the deep strings behind "Note 2 Self" are an example). She moves from simple guitar and piano to a lush full set of instruments (note how "Die Evergreen" builds from its opening). She knows how to use dynamics superbly and, in my estimation, her vocal work, as good as it's always been, has never been better than on this disc. This is, quite simply, a great disc. It's a pity that someone as talented as Emm doesn't seem to have caught the wider audience that some vastly lesser-talented artists have these days. But such is the way of the world. Buy this. Don't wait. Buy it now. |
