Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This sexy but lackluster fantasy novel kicks off the Daughters of the Moon series by the author of Drive-By and Party Girl. High school sophomore Vanessa and her best friend, Catty, have magical powers. But while Catty sees her ability to time travel as a gift, Vanessa hates her own ability to turn invisible: she "tried to control her molecules, but in times of intense emotion, her molecules had more power than her ability to restrain them and the light from a full moon seemed to fuel their charge." Vanessa wants to date the handsome, long-haired Michael and be like everyone else, but whenever he kisses her, her feet and hands start disappearing. Then Catty turns up missing, and Vanessa's new friend Serena (a mind reader) reveals that they are goddesses, Daughters of the Moon, who must battle the evil Atrox and its dissolute band of "Followers" (from whose souls Atrox has sucked all hope) who haunt the Los Angeles club scene. Multicultural and cutting-edge, the California-hip backdrop may appeal to some readers and the book contains enough affirmations of "girl power" to please any budding feminist. But in the end, this series reads like an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without the camp. Into the Cold Fire, the next in the series, follows Serena as she falls prey to the dark side. Ages 12-up. (Oct.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Two teens discover the secret to their mysterious powers., August 4, 2000
This review is from: Goddess of the Night (Daughters of the Moon 1) (Hardcover)
Vanessa and her best friend, Catty, appear to be just two normal teenage girls. But the Los Angeles high school students both have mysterious supernatural powers that set them apart from others. Vanessa has the ability to become invisible, and Catty can travel through time. They have known about these powers since they were little girls, but they have kept them hidden from everyone but each other. But now Catty has dissapeared. If Vanessa wants to save her friend, she's going to have to trust two other girls who say they are like her and Catty, as well as a mysterious woman who claims Vanessa is a goddess. I really enjoyed this book. I can't wait to read future titles in the series. I would reccomend it to teens who like fantasy, but not to anyone younger than twelve or thirteen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vanessa.... Goddess?, November 1, 2000

This review is from: Goddess of the Night (Daughters of the Moon 1) (Hardcover)
Vanessa Cleveland wants a normal teenager's life. The only problem is getting there- and that means NOT turning invisible. Vanessa has the power of turning invisible and she soon learns that she is a goddess, along with her friends, Catty, Jimena, and Serena. They each have their own powers that can help win their battle against the evil Atrox. Besides trying to save people's hope, they also try to win the luv of people that have stolen their hearts. Will good prevail, or will evil take over their sanity?

This book was excellent! The plot was thrilling, and the characters were well described. Ms. Ewing does a wonderful job of describing the outfits and scenery in the story, and her imagination is great! For those of you who are looking for a magical adventure that is very realistic, you should definitely read: Goddess of the Night.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Book, November 12, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Goddess of the Night (Daughters of the Moon 1) (Hardcover)
Vanessa, Catty, Serena, and Jimena are four girls with special powers. Vanessa can expand her molecules and become invisible at will, Catty can travel through time, Serena can read minds, and Jimena has premonitions (visions about the future.) Only together can they defeat the Atrox, a group of people whose goal is to bring hatred and darkness to the earth. When Catty goes missing, Vanessa fears it is too late. Has she gotten lost in time, or does the Atrox have her?
THe book, Goddess of the Night, by Lynne Ewing, is an outstanding novel, especially for those who like fantasy. However, I recommend it for all people. It is a delightful book with plenty of suspense to keep you reading all night. The descriptions are so detailed, you almost think you are there! THis book takes you on a magical journey filled with surprise and much more. If you want a fantastic book, Goddess of the Night is the right choice.
