Shyne's got talent, but the album could be better,
By Bandit (Toronto, ON CAN) - See all my reviews

Shyne should have never signed with Bad Boy. It's messed up what Puff and the courts did to him. He definitely has the skills to make it on his own, and Gangland Records was a step in the right direction. I'm positive that when he's released from prison he'll drop some hot sh*t. As for this album, you get the feeling it was thrown together in a hurry with makeshift songs. I wonder why that is? Anywayz, This album has some serious tracks, but the rest of the quality is somewhat poor. Although it's still good to hear Shyne's gritty N.Y. voice, there are plenty of tracks which could have been executed better. Best Tracks: The Gang, More or Less, Quasi O.G., and you gotta hear him tear up 50 on For the Record.

Don't Forget About This Album,
This review is from: Godfather Buried Alive (Audio CD)
Shyne's Godfather Buried Alive was released in late 2003 and it seems the disc has become a forgotten.
Well the disc is mad hot. The production is crazy. The album includes production by Kanye West, Irv Gotti, Swizz Beats, Just Blaze, Moses Leviy among others. The song "More or Less" is hot an "Quasi o.g." has a reggae hip hop thing going on. "Behind The Walls" (east coast gangsta mix) features Korupt and Nate Dogg along with Shyne. You have to wonder if the lyrics are new because Shyne refers to himself as Po on most cuts. Po is a nickname he adopted for himself. The track "Shyne" is just a banger, something for the boys in the streets to pump when they are riding out this summer. The ladies will like this cut also. On the track "Martyr" Shyne questions whether life is better than death. Ashanti is featured on the track "Jimmy Choo." Foxy Brown also appears on a few cuts. "Godfather" is another cut that is for the streets and the radio. The album art work is nice. Inside of the disc are not one but two pictures of Shyne and the late Lisa Left Eye Lopes along with older pics of Shyne. 13 cuts deep Godfather Buried Alive is the Shyne album that his fans have been waiting for and fans new and old won't be let down. It was worth the wait.

This album is dope...,
By Ac "ac" (Killafornia) - See all my reviews

Some people just analyze things too much. Take this album for what it is, its dope music. Fools say they listen to the mix tapes and stuff, but when the album comes out, they don't like it because of the beats? c'mon, what kind of beats are on mix tapes again? Does anyone actually do original production on their mix tape stuff? Hellno. Be realistic. Don't deny it, I mean, c'mon, the man is in jail for god's sake. For him to be able to pull this off from jail tells me this man is going to blow up when he gets out. His lyrical content is tight. I think the beats are excellent for his style and voice, contrary to what some think. "Quasi o.g." is a classic. I mean, he lays it down politically but in a gangsta way (to an average "rap" fan, it just sounds "gangsta" because he talks about guns etc but dont actually hear what he is trying to convey) . That is much better than having an artist saying "Yeah!" or "OOhkay" or "Geee UUUNit !" throughout a record. I was never a fan of Shyne when he was on Bad Boy, but after hearing this record, I might pick up his first one. I just hope someone doesn't hate on him and kill him when he gets out.

impressive,

This album was impressive, especially considering the rapper's circumstances. I give much credit to shyne, for his perseverence in his adverse times. The album's tone and outlook is gloomy and depressing, but it coincides with his style. I knew I liked shyne after I first saw him in his "bad boys" video. He's intimidating and thuggish, but enticing with his unique voice and style. Hopefully shyne will be released early so that he can grace us with more of his music. I know that after he serves his time, he will do what he does best.

Shyne- Godfather Buried Alive,
This review is from: Godfather Buried Alive (Audio CD)
Three years ago Rapper Shyne (aka Jamal Barrows) was sentenced to ten years in a state prison for his involvement in a nightclub shooting. At the time he was signed to Bad Boy Records, and P. Diddy who was also at the club the night of the shooting also went to trial, but was cleared of all charges. No possibility of parole till Shyne has served eight+ years of his sentence. Before all this went down Shyne was an up and coming rapper with one successful self titled album released. Although incarcerated Shyne is now signed with Def Jam and has his own label Gangland Records, "Godfather Buried Alive" is a collection of unreleased material Shyne had recorded prior to his sentencing.
After a short intro, "Quasi O.G." starts the album off on a hardcore note, Shyne talking about the dark future he expects and his upcoming trial, he saves one line for the father who never acknowledged him a Belize politician. Next comes the album's lead single "More or Less" this is a first class banger which benefits from Kayne West production. Kurupt and Nate Dogg make an appearance on the decent "Behind the Walls" which is followed up by the thugged out "Shyne". Next comes a new freestyle from Shyne who speaks over the phone straight from prison, titled "For the Record" Shyne tears into 50 Cent who originally made a diss towards Shyne. "Martyr" is laced with a sad beat and has Shyne rhyming between his own chorus, while the answer to his question may seem simple to some, others who have hit rock bottom could easily relate to this one. "Jimmy Choo" has Shyne talking to the ladies backed by some soulful Ashanti vocals. Shyne reps himself on two more grimey tracks "Godfather" and "The Gang". Feeling the beat and Shyne lyric's on "Edge" another standout track. "Here with me" is more of the same. My favourite track at the moment is the last one, "Diamonds and Mac 10's" a sick track which benefits from Just Blaze's premium production. People who are interested in buying this album should know beforehand that this is previously unreleased work. Unlike other MC's Shyne does not have the opportunity to provide new tracks, or rework old ones. Because of that some could find that lyrical content is repetitive but its on point with where Shyne was at the time. Some MC's talk about how they live the crime life without actually doing it. Shyne seems the exception, as his life has shown. Overall I like "Godfather Buried Alive", while short it has some standout tracks making it an album I would recommend to Shyne fans.

"Godfather Buried Alive" Review,
By Crazy Jim (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Godfather Buried Alive (Audio CD)
Nobody exploits controversy quite like record labels so it's no surprise that after being sentenced to a ten-year bid for his part in the infamous 1999 club shooting that also involved mega-celebrities Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and Jennifer Lopez, that Jamal "Shyne" Barrow would become one of the most sought-after free agents in the game. Just a handful of weeks after inking a deal with Def Jam, the label quickly pushed out this thirteen-track collection of material that Shyne recorded before his incarceration.
More than a few big names have shown up to help out Shyne on "Godfather Buried Alive". Kanye West contributes the production on "More Or Less", Ashanti and the Murder Inc. family bless "Jimmy Choo", and Foxy Brown backs up Po on "Tha Gang". Still, Shyne seems to put out his best work when he's the solo attraction as is the case on "Quasi O.G." and the dark but effective "Martyr", which is in my opinion the best track that Shyne has recorded so far. What is less impressive is "For The Record", a diss record towards 50 Cent that Shyne recorded over the telephone. Even with a beat behind it, the recording still sounds sloppy and hard to hear. It's too bad that for the first and only new track he has released since being locked up, he chose to go this route. Of the remaining songs, two have already been released, "Shyne", a year-old party track produced for Swizz Beat's 2002 compilation and the remix of "Behind The Walls", a four-year-old single from the Oz soundtrack. Both of them aren't bad by any means but may have worked better if they hadn't already been released for such a lengthy period of time. Some critics have attempted to compare "Buried Alive" to Pac's "Me Against The World", based solely on the similiar circumstances of their releases. Unfortunately that is really the only reason for the comparison. Shyne's second LP offers very little improvement over his self-titled debut. The production is solid but Shyne still seems caught up in his rhymes about guns and coke-dealing. Perhaps the fact that he had to rush to record a lot of his material before he got locked up has something to do with it but I still feel Shyne is capable of better.

Godfather Buried Alive,

This is my favorite album of 2004 so far, tied with Kanye's College Dropout.
1.Buried Alive Intro-No Rating 2.Quasi O.G.-4/5-Great track with a Bob Marley sample 3.More Or Less-5/5- 1st single-One of my favorite songs on the album, great beat by Kanye, and Shyne is sick on this track 4.Behind The Walls ft. Kurupt & Nate Dogg (East Coast Gangsta Mix)-5/5-Another one of my favorites. Great beat by Daz, I wish he wouldve put in his 16 but Kurupt & Shyne rip it up, and Nate obviously puts in a great chorus 5.Shyne-5/5-Another one of my favorites.Swizz is great on production & lyrically shyne is great on this one 6.For The Record-4.5/5-Great dis song toward 50 Cent, it was recorded over the phone while he was in jail. He says stuff like he trys to sound like Mase & my favorite "Them N****s wouldve died if they shot me 9 times...". It would be a 5 but it gets annoying that its over the phone 7.Martyr-5/5-Not that great production, but probably the best track lyrically on the album 8.Jimmy Choo ft.Ashanti-4.5/5-2nd single-Hot beat 9.Godfather-4.5/5-The beat is great on this one, & shyne still doesnt dissapoint 10.The Gang ft.Foxy Brown-4.5/5-Not great production again but foxy & shyne are great together (catchy hook, too) 11.Edge-5/5-Hot beat, shyne's flow is great 12.Here With Me-4.5/5-Very good song, doesn't sound like a traditional Just Blaze beat unlike the next track 13.Diamonds & Mac-10's-5/5-Great song to end the album with Just Blaze on the track & nice flow |
