Kirby Lives Again, June 19, 2011
This review is from: Godland, Vol. 2: Another Sunny Delight (v. 2) (Paperback)
Another Sunny Delight, volume 2 of Joe Casey and Tom Scioli' Jack Kirby inspired cosmic adventure does exactly what you expect...MORE! The pleasure in this series is wholehearted embrace of classic Kirbyesque cosmic adventure. The fantastic characters, the immense scope, the truer than true hero and the blackhearted (but perhaps they can be saved!?!?) villains make it work. The art reminds me of Kirby, but it is not a copy. The words "inspired by" should be in the front of your mind if you are reading this book. If you think Kirby stuff was "too much" you probably shouldn't read this series. If you love it, then you should pick this up. Joe Casey does an excellent job of taking Kirby's brand of adventure and keeping what works and changing what doesn't. It is a great story with character designs, layouts, and plot that bring together the personal and the cosmic in an interesting fun way.

GODLAND Gives me Cosmicgasms, April 3, 2011
This review is from: Godland, Vol. 2: Another Sunny Delight (v. 2) (Paperback)
I'm a big fan of this series. I think it's an absolute blast. It's not exactly appropriate for children, but it's not entirely deserving of a mature rating either. Casey and Scioli do Kirby as a genre, and this offends some and wins the hearts of others. It doesn't exactly offer anything fresh or new, but it's also unlike any comic currently out there.
I really don't know what else to say about this series, other than it's a throw back to the cosmic superhero comics of the 70's that adds slightly adult humor to give the genre an almost sarcastic twist. It fully embraces everything eye-rolling banter and monologues, thought-bubbles and totally old school artwork. The villains are all pretty hilarious, and the series is all over the place when it comes to time-line and galactic-scope.
I get a lot of enjoyment reading this series; it's just good ol' fashioned comic book fun. The story is well written and the overarching concerns throughout the series develop into what can only be described as cosmically epic. I'm exhausted by the endless continuity of the DC and Marvel universes. Godland's plot has been set on slow-burn from the beginning, and Joe Casey has a very clear dramatic conclusion in mind. Volume 6 or Celestial Edition 3 will end the series for those collecting the trades.
Volume 2 picks up pretty much right where volume 1 ending. Collecting issues 6-13 + an Xmas short, we learn more about Adam Archer's abilities, purpose.. and deep personal shame??? We also get some head-shaking laughs from Basil and Nickelhead. Adam's sisters make a great team and even better supportive characters. Neela distances herself from her family, mainly her brother, and Maxim the alien space-dog makes himself at home at infinity tower.
Pick up Godland and be humbled!!
