Editorial Reviews

Review

"Rich characters, misery, betrayal, sex and a dose of brutal Viking violence, mixed together for an easy, enjoyable read!"
        -- Medievalists.net

"Once again, Jayden Woods creates a contextually factual and colorful narrative that will enlighten as well as entertain the reader.... As an historian, I highly recommend Godric the Kingslayer."
      --Kay J. Blalock, Ph.D.

Format: Paperback
Godric the Kingslayer, ISBN 9781463728366, Sons of Mercia, Volume 2, paperback 524 pages plus 5 page introduction to Sons of Mercia Volume 3, by Jayden Woods.
Eadric Streona is an unusual swineherd who, by intelligent maneuvering and some good fortune, managed to elevate his position in life to a relatively high degree. He became owner of considerable property and attained a position where he was the associate of nobles and kings.
Godric, Eadric's illegitimate son, is shunned by his father's wife and, as a bastard, faces a most uncertain future, except he is a favorite of Eadric and of Thorkall the Tall, a Jomsviking who is a ruler in Denmark and in the English king's favor. Eadric believes that England's future lies with Canute and enlists Godric, at a very young age, to aid in killing one of the reigning kings. From this point the repercussions are many. Godric's father is killed and he acquires an overriding desire to revenge his death, He becomes enamored of a young girl, gains permission to marry her in the future, and is sent to Denmark where he becomes a mighty warrior. He returns to England under unusual circumstances. Here, his fortunes rise and fall. During the ensuing years he continues to be involved in the endless intrigue, betrayal, deceit, suspicion, distrust, and jealousy of the chaotic struggle for power that marked the period.
The author has given us an interesting protagonist who must make endless decisions for which he does not seem qualified. It does not seem to stem from a lack of intelligence but rather from a courage and boldness combined with a tremendous naiveté. The results of his decisions often lead to unexpected consequences and most detrimental results.
In general, the author has provided an interesting story revolving around a period of history rife with conflict and one that lends itself to strange and unusual characters. Reviewed by John H. Manhold award winning fiction/non-fiction author

Format: Paperback
Another hit for Jayden Woods. I loved "Eadric the Grasper" and couldn't wait for Volume 2. "Godric the Kingslayer" did not disappoint me, in fact, I enjoyed this book just as much, if not more, than her first book. Jayden's books have opened a new world to me. I haven't been able to leave the "Middle Ages" since I discovered it through her talent and apparent love for story telling. I love the way she brings her book to life. Jayden's scenes are so vivid that you can see the people, feel the texture of their clothes, smell the food, and hear the crackle of dried leaves under your feet. A glass of Mead and a chunk of bread sounds delicious to me.
This book stand alone, but reading "Eadric the Grasper" first gave me my first glimpse of Godric. He had a rough life from the start. It seemed like anything and everything he cared for, either left or was killed.
However, Godric grows up and learns from the best: "Thorkell the Tall" who is, from what I've read in Jayden's books and others, a huge, extremely tall Viking, who intimidated everyone. He killed first and asked questions later (if he had time). Despite that, you can't help but love him in this series. He takes Godric under his (huge) wings and teaches him how to survive in a world that is full of dishonest, disloyal, backstabbing royals and those who aspire to power.
You'll find yourself intrigued, in awe, and amazed with Godric, who obtains the title Kingslayer, but you'll have to read this book to find out if he truly came by the nickname earnestly. This book is full of adventure, vengeance, excellent battle scenes, love, passion, happy times, and tragedy. You can't change certain facts, but Jayden built a fantastic story around those few facts that were preserved in history. Jayden has a way of keeping you captivated in every chapter. I loved it, recommend it and look forward to Volume 3.

Another installment in the Sons of Mercia series.

Woods has a talent for developing great characters and swift moving dialogue. Even if you're not a history buff, it's a great read.
