Each character in this novel is so incredibly well-developed that you won't want to say goodbye when the book ends! If you love Chicago, or baseball, or the 1950's or a just a great, solid read, you'll love this book. I can't wait for my wife to finish reading it so I can read it again! I've already ordered extra copies for Christmas presents!

5.0 out of 5 stars A one-of-a-kind slice-of-life tale turned grandiose., March 6, 2007
This review is from: Gods of the Andes (Paperback)
Written by Southwest Chicago native Jack Zimmerman, and set in his home town during the summer of '59, Gods of the Andes is a novel about ordinary, borderline destitute people struggling to get by in their daily lives - and a masterful betting scheme concerning baseball's White Sox, who are poised to seize the American League Pennant. A colorful novel of dreams tantalizingly out-of-reach pervading a neighborhood, and the willingness to risk all in hope of fantastic payoff, Gods of the Andes comes alive with vibrant impressions, boisterous dialogue, and the urgency of desperate hope that threatens when one's life is barely a step away from being penniless on the streets. A one-of-a-kind slice-of-life tale turned grandiose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for White Sox Fans!, January 9, 2007

I really liked the way the book covered many different people in many different occupations and in various stages of their lives.
It had a predictable ending, but the ending is really what you had hoped it would end like, so I ended up pleased with the overall experiehce.
I had a lot to relate to with the location and story period of the book, so I probably enjoyed it more than the average person would enjoy it.
