Great Teaching,
This review is from: The Gods Aren't Angry (DVD)
I would have to say, that i had been anticipating this release for some time now. Rob is a favorite of mine (which isnt uncommon today) and i thought a topic like this would suit him well. The thing i most enjoyed about it was his constant comparision to old testament sacrifices and the Grace of God. This video played much more like a sermon that his 1st release "Everything is Spiritual", which was more like a lecture. This release also explained what the Gospel is in a way that i have never thought of before. I am honestly thinking (as a pastor) that if you have someone with doubts in the existence or even love of God, allowing them to borrow The Gods Arent Angry and Everything is Spiritual may dismiss their doubts and get them on the path they need to be before they even set foot into a church service. Thank God for teachers like Rob Bell who speak in a way that even the biggest biblical novice could comprehend 10,000 years of history.
100% Recommend.

Walking out of the downtown LA theatre, I turned to my friend and said, "I'm buying this one." He nodded, "me to," he whispered; and it was then that I realized... my friend was behind me and I was talking to a stranger.
For those of you who know some of the drama surrounding the message of this particular tour and those who stood outside and protested Rob's event - all I can say is...theologically unfounded. The people who put down Rob Bell and criticize his books have not properly taken the time to do a thorough study of his teachings and have not looked into what he truly believes. Mr. Bell holds the Greek and Hebrew scriptures in the highest regard and it is his fresh approach to these ancient texts that has caused thousands of young pastors to begin their own journeys away from out dated seminarian approaches. Or perhaps you just want a cool video to watch where a man dressed in black sits on a fake stone altar and tells you stories of cavemen, well then this is for you to. See, it has something for everyone.

If you liked Everything is Spiritual, you'll like this one too.
I wouldn't say (as a few reviews here) that it's not as good or as intense. I think it is equally informative, but different subject (history of ancient cults and customs). I think also that it is a lot more intense in the essence of the content. Everything is Spiritual is meant to bring reason to faith (...or faith to reason?), but The Gods Aren't Angry is more than that. It brings LOVE into the game. So now we have FAITH, REASON and LOVE. You may not agree with some of the points he makes. I've been hearing that there is evolution preached there, or universalism. I was raised conservative, and when I first heard Bell's preachings I was a little scared too. But I've been documenting my faith, I've been looking for the roots of what I believe and found that there is a lot to be learned and that what he is saying makes a lot of sense. I'd suggest to see Everything is Spiritual first, so you know what I'm talking about (see the round and square discussion). We don't need to embrace any new doctrine we hear, but we sure need to revise the ones we have and let our minds to be a little stretched before they become arthritic. The Gods Aren't Ungry is meant to give you a big picture of God relationship with humanity and His plan to restore it through Jesus Christ. It begins with the first encounters with humans and the Devine, to Abraham, and culminates with Jesus. If you don't agree with all his "doctrine", you may still like this DVD as long as you catch at least a glimpse of its main message: ...YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS. To me it was refhreshing and big time hope giving.

A lot of the reviewers here says this is not as good as Everything is Spiritual. If your main goal is apologetics or to connect physics to Christianity, then maybe they are right. But if your goal is to understand the historical roots of the need for a savior and to live out a joyful, God-filled life, this is the better film. I recommend both, because they both blew me away. This made me cry and love God even more.

Really good, but it's no "Everything is Spiritual",

Okay,
So I haven't seen the DVD (because it's not available as of this review) but I saw the show live in Grand Rapids, which was the final show and there was a film crew there. Let me start out by saying it was really good. I enjoyed it and it was decently biblical. I also like how he occasionally uses Rabbinical tradition. He does this not to say that some of the Rabbis stories about biblical characters were historically accurate, but to highlight how certain Rabbis thought about real biblical characters (like Abraham) to explain certain commandments like the prohibition against worshipping other gods and making idols. See the website for Christian Book Distributors for video clips containing one of these moments. That being said, it wasn't as good as "Everything is Spiritual," which I loved. EIS had a lot more new information, like all the physics stuff. A lot of what he says in "The gods aren't Angry"...well...I felt like I already knew it. Don't get me wrong, I still liked it a lot. I also plan on getting the DVD when it's available. Do I recommend it? Yes. Is it Rob's best work? No, but it's still good. Having been to Mars Hill a number of times it felt like another one of his sermons instead of a special event teaching.

Well Done and Challenging. Thank You, Rob Bell.,

Rob Bell does an amazing job of weaving historical narratives and Christian and Jewish literature together with contemporary questions about faith and what it means to be a follower of Jesus in a pluralistic and postmodern culture. Whether you are a Christian already or a person who is genuinely seeking answers to life's toughest and biggest questions, you will find this video presentation to be refreshing and challenging. In particular, Bell spends time exploring some current hypotheses and questions about Christianity, not the least of which is its seeming parallels with other (Pagan) religions. Bell makes a much needed contribution in practical theology and understanding with "The God's Aren't Angry." Don't miss it.

A Breath Of Fresh Air,
By David Margulis (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Gods Aren't Angry (DVD)
Rob once agains turns Christianity (as we Westerner's know it) on it's proverbial head with his lecture: THE GODS AREN'T ANGRY. Having been raised in the deep south, this teaching is REVOLUTIONARY. At the least to me, a person unhappy with religion and christians in general, I found this DVD not only to be a breath of fresh air, but couldn't stop saying "WOW!" for 15 minutes after it had ended. If you don't say "WOW!" at least once after the ending; then maybe you missed the details and possibly, the whole point. But then again, I have a great appreciation for any teaching of Christianity that doesn't "guilt-trip" me or come with a heavy hand. Rob is the man! You will be inspired.

Brilliant! I so enjoyed this teaching by Rob Bell. He is a wonderful communicator of the Word and the heart of God. This teaching is fundamental as its what separates us from all the other religions out there. We have a God that is knowable and wants to communicate life and interact with us. Why would you want to serve any one or anything else.
Good job Rob!! This is a DVD to own! |
