Book Description

March 5, 1990

In this challenging and enlightening companion volume to the bestselling Goddesses in Everywoman, Jean Shinoda Bolen turns her attention to the powerful inner patterns--or archetypes--that shape men's personalities, careers, and personal relationships. Viewing these archtypes as the inner counterparts of the outer world of cultural stereotypes, she demonstrates how men an women can gain an nvaluable sense of wholeness and integration when what they do is consistent with who they are. Dr. Bolen introduces these patterns in the guise of eight archetypal gods, or personality types, with whom the reader will identify. From the authoritarian power-seeking gods (Zeus, Poseidon) to the gods of creativity (Apollo, Hephaestus) to the sensual Dionysus, Dr. Bolen shows men how to identify their ruling gods, how to decide which to cultivate and which to overcome, and how to tap thepwer of these enduring archetypes in order to enrich and strengthen their lives. She also stresses the importance of understanding which gods you are attracted to and which are compatible with your expectations, uncovers the origins of the often-difficult father-son relationship, and explores society's deep conflict between nurturing behavior and the need to foster masculinity.

In Gods in Everyman Dr. Bolen presents us with a compassionate and lucid male psychology that will help all men and women to better understand themselves and their relationships with their fathers, their sons, their brothers, and their lovers.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her popular Goddesses in Every woman , Jungian analyst Bolen told females how to relate to the Aphrodite or Hera within them. Now she's back with more received wisdom from Mount Olympus, this time for men, as exemplified by such thunderbolts as: "An Apollo man isn't much of a lover"; "The Zeus man prides himself on seeing the bigger picture"; "A Hermes man finds settling down difficult." Her attempt to systematically map a masculine psychology based on archetypes personified by Greek gods is at least as simplistic as sun-sign astrology but often sounds more vapid. She does instant readings on celebs too: John Belushi and Jim Morrison, "public Dionysus figures," burned out and didn't survive their midlife crises; Robert Kennedy "had an Ares streak," which did not endear him to the Mafia, and so forth. 5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, April 15, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Gods In Everyman (Paperback)
I am hardly a literary critic. I'm just a 38 year old husband and father and the product of an extremely unfortunate childhood. I bought this book and couldn't put it down. If you're a guy, you'll find yourself described among the author's pages and you'll see yourself a bit differently as a man. It's really refreshing and inspiring. I know my life has changed. If you're a woman, you'll probably understand the man you love, whether he's your mate, your son or father, a bit better. It's a great book. :

I recently finished reading Jean Shinoda Bolen's book on archetypes in women over 50 and found it to be exceptional. I purchased other of her work and this one on men's archetypes is providing me, as a woman, insight into the male behaviour. I find it to be very informative. She has a way of describing the archetypes that grasps your thoughts and runs with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars I keeping giving this book to people, January 4, 2003

This review is from: Gods In Everyman (Paperback)
One of my favorite Jungian authors has written a book that I keep giving away. I have given it to young fathers trying to understand their sons, I have given it to friends trying to understand themselves, I have given it to collegues trying to understand their patients, and I give it to myself by reading every now and then.

If you want a framework, a language, a reference point to understand and discuss men's issues....this a great book. I used it in a workshop I led for psychiatric residents and for three years heard references to it in our discussions and supervision.
