From the Inside Flap

For Deborah Burch, a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan, life has been a series of miracles. Writing a book is just one more of them. "The words of this book came to me in a dream several years ago," she explains. "And I knew that I was supposed to write it."

But, with five children at the time and a full-time job at an artist's studio, she wasn't sure how to fit it into her busy life. So, she put the poem in a drawer.

This is certainly not the first book that was inspired by a late-night dream or that was shelved for a lengthy period of time, but the series of events that led to its publication may indeed fall under the classification of a miracle.

God's Greatest Gift is "all about love," she says. "Each of our six children has a page of the book dedicated especially to them."

I'm going to be completely honest here - because that's what a blog reviewer should be. This is not my favorite review book. I was excited to receive it, as I love getting books to read with my kids, but I wasn't thrilled with the message. I'll explain more below.
First of all, here's what I liked about this book:
1.) The pages are colorful and fun. The illustrations are simply, yet eye catching - perfect for little ones.
2.) Each page only has one line. I love simple children's books like this! A two year old can only hold on for so long. Haha! A book with just a few lines on a page is perfect for them because they are ready to help you turn the pages pretty quickly. Haha!
3.) I thought the book had more pages than it does. That's because the pages are a lovely, thick, sturdy paper. This makes it harder for a little one to tear and also makes it easier for them to turn the pages.

Now here's what I disliked:
1.) The entire book is about God's greatest gift to us. Each page leading up to the end of the book asks, "Is God's greatest gift...?" For example, "Is God's greatest gift the creatures that live in the sea?" This all leads up to the final pages, which say, "All these gifts are precious, its true, but God's greatest gift is you!" While I appreciate the sentiment, I don't believe its correct. As my husband said when I asked him to read the book, "God's greatest gift is not a child, its THE CHILD." God's greatest gift was His Son, Jesus Christ. I don't think this book is meant to be deceitful or in any way to draw our attention away from the gift we have received in our salvation through Jesus Christ, I just think that maybe it was a bad choice of words.

I am always searching for good quality, time withstanding, positive message books to read my little children. When I find such a book, I am eager to share with everyone I meet so they, too, can experience the book with their little ones. God's Greatest Gift is one of those books.

From the moment I held the book in my hand and flipped through the pages, before even reading the story, I was impressed. This is a high quality book, a hard cover with dust jacket, but beyond that, the pages are durable and thick, not quite board book but much stronger than traditional paper pages. This book is one that my toddler can flip through and still be readable years later.

The story walks readers through many different things that are gifts from God - stars, moon, mountains, flowers and much more in a fun rhyme, and leads children to discover the Greatest Gift God has given us. Adults and children alike can find joy in reading this book together, and also plenty of opportunity to discuss and learn as they read. There is even a little activity for readers to do together once the story has been completed. Written by a mom of 6, this story has heart, creativity and a feeling of love woven throughout the tale.

The illustrations are quite beautiful and inviting. In scrapbook style, each page is deliberately designed with pictures that seem to pop off the page and invite the reader to imagine the textures they see. This book is truly a delight from cover to cover, each page revealing a treasure all its own. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to discover and add this book to my collection and know we will be enjoying it for years to come!

I received a copy of this book to review for free through the Book Crash program. I was not required nor compensated to write a positive review, all thoughts are my own.

God's Greatest Gift (written and illustrated by Deborah Burch) is a Christian hardback book that illustrates to children that they are blessings from God.

The aesthetics of this book are charming. Lively colorful drawings and the playful font (curly-Q's, and dotting the letter i with a flower) are unique and inviting.

Another feature of this book worth noting is the thickness and sturdiness of the pages--not as chunky as board book pages, but brawny enough to allow tiny fingers to turn them with ease.

The rhyming text with a rhythmic flow asks the question, "Is God's greatest gift...?" then details several possibilities throughout, with the final statement revealing the answer.

The child portrayed in this story could be seen as either gender, showing no physical qualities pointing to male or female, but with flowers, butterflies, etc... I'd assume the character is a girl. Either way, little boys and girls alike can enjoy this book.

Overall, this book shares a sweet message and is a wonderful quality book for a young child's library. With a page in the front with a `To:' and `From;' section it is convenient to present as a gift.
