The Honest Truth About Your Walk with God,
By
This review is from: The God's Honest Truth (Paperback)
This book had a profound effect upon me. You may ask, "Why this one more than other books?" It was so profound to me because this book was about me.
No, I did not write this book. It was written by Darin Hufford, the founder and director of Married to the Master Ministries based in Phoenix, Arizona. The book resonated with me so much because like myself, Darin had to lose his religion before his spiritual connection with GOD was taken to another level. The most magnificent aspect of Darin's epiphany is when GOD revealed it to him. It was not when he was lost and confused in worldly means. It was while he watched an auditorium fill with Christians coming to hear the word of GOD. What Darin realized was that the majority of the people entering the conference were in spiritual pain. In Darin's words, "The people were basically disappointed with their religion. It was if they had been sold something by a con artist and once they got it home, it didn't work." Wow! I cannot tell you how many times I've experienced this in my life. When I was in rebellion and away from the church, I cannot tell you how many times I watched Christians who had found Jesus that continued carrying their own burdens. Christians have no idea how much they deter people who want to find GOD from coming to church. When those that are lost see the `churchgoers' still burdened with spiritual pain, they don't see a benefit. Why trade pain for another pain? So rather than embrace Christians-they flee! Darin's message on this subject is, "There is a power in GOD's kindness that can literally carry you to freedom!" Please realize that the focus in this message is not on the church but on the perception of religion. "The purpose of this book is not to expose the faults of the Church, but to declare the truth and beauty of GOD." And what a beauty Darin Hufford shares in The God's Honest Truth. Hufford has delivered a message that strikes at the heart of the old as well as nourishes the roots of the young in Christ. As I moved from chapter to chapter, I felt as if Darin Hufford was ministering directly to me. He gave me The God's Honest Truth; addressing aspects of my own life, GOD's love and what GOD has in store for us all. As he expresses the Divine message GOD asked him to deliver, Hufford constantly reminds you that, "Truth ceases to be the truth if it is spoken in any other tone than love." This is one of the most relevant and most powerful Christian books I have read for `spiritual' seekers. Look for Hufford to be compared to Rick Warren and Joel Osteen. The God's Honest Truth, in my opinion, is one of GOD's best sellers.

The Heart Of God,
By
This review is from: The God's Honest Truth (Paperback)
The only way to describe this book is to say that it is the heart of God committed to paper. I am a former member of Pastor Darin's congregation and I can tell you that he lives what he preaches. I'm not saying this because he is a friend. It's because he lives his life like this that he is my friend. Before I met him I had no idea what being a Christian or living a Christian life was about. I knew about church but didn't know a thing about the heart of God. When I met Darin, the message God gave him changed my life. It is a powerful, life-changing message but only if you allow it to change you. In order to allow it to do so you have to be willing to put up with a great deal of resistance from other Christians and be looked at as a heretic to a certain degree. It seems to me that there was once a certain Jewish carpenter who endured the same thing. What's good for him is good enough for me.This book is for everyone but not everyone will be willing to receive it into their heart. If you are one the ones that will, you won't be sorry. It is a message you won't soon forget.

Break the chains of religion,
By
This review is from: The God's Honest Truth (Paperback)
Wow! What a life changing book. It challenges many of the issues that make God so hard to relate to. I have a better understanding of who God is and what he is not. A very faith provoking and insightful book. This book is deep and shouldn't be read just once and the put away. Sometimes I had to read a passage 3 or 4 times just so the "Truth" could penetrate what I learned from religion and help me to see more clearly. A must read for all seeking to know who God is and how He feels about them.

heart & soul Christian stories,
By
This review is from: The God's Honest Truth (Paperback)
Rebeccasreads recommends THE GOD'S HONEST TRUTH - what else could we do? All humor aside, we feel a bit odd offering such an unabashed & deeply committed Christian book, however, it's well & earnestly written &, personal religious preferences notwithstanding, it opens up a whole other way of looking at, feeling about God & love, relationship & spirit, & walking an engaged conscious life.
Darin Hufford, a minster who discovered how miserable most everyone he met on his circuit was in their Christian lives, has taken all the best from the 1970's Human Potential Movement & re-souled it with aphorisms & stories for the Christian reader -- & for anyone wishing to understand Christians. Not a book to be read in one gulp, more like a box of stories you delve into when you want something sweet for your soul.

This book details the "love scriptures" 1Cor 13:4-7. It shows what the world calls "love" and what Biblical love actually is. Wonderful!

More new age theology,
By
This review is from: The God's Honest Truth (Paperback)
More fast food Christianity and cheap grace concepts.
The author touches on new age concepts, creating a feel good, buddy God, who doesn't demand anything from us. Although I agree with his points concerning the performance attitude of religion within the institution,he misses the point. It is the apathy and lack of commitment that hinders churches from making disciples of Christ. The author's alternative, while at first seeming progressive, is basiclly more of the same theology preached from many pulpits today. Conforming religion to fit in with our indulgent yuppie view of the world, instead of conforming our world view to God's. Religion as we know it today is flawed. Although leaving religion frees us from a set of false obligations, true discipleship requires a much more deeper commitment, not less as the author implies. The author claims that we can never know God if we fear him, so we should abandon our fear of God. Is this true? When we are children we fear our parents to a degree even if they are warm loving parents. Although some fear can be unhealthy, a degree of fear can also be part of a loving father/child relationship. The author fails to address this, instead he brings God down to our level making him more like just a friend rather than a Father figure, which would include friendship while retaining a degree of respect and reverence that the child would have towards the parent. We may grow in our love for God and our fear may diminish as we gain perfect love, but most of us will never have the perfect love, Christ has for us, so a small amount of fear and reverence should always be present towards our Savior and Creator. We could throw the whole bible away and be left with the only two commandments that really matter, love God and love your neighbour. But most of us fail to do this and through traditional religion, which preaches false obligation, or Darin's new age theology which preaches no obligation, we are left with excuses to indulge our own selfless desires and look out for number one, instead of others. Darin's book may set us on the right path away from traditional religion, but somehow the message steers us away from the true meaning of discipleship. Commitment to serving others in love rather than religious institutions. |
