1.0 out of 5 stars Book written by a mad christian.
I was curious to read a book depicting the experiences of an author that had lived the 60`s and the indian culture, but what i found is a pamphlet of an egotistical person who never understood deeply the indian philosophical system, nor understood her own religion (Catholicism) to the extent of not knowing who is Jesus. She...

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy Reading From Personal Experience, February 5, 2006

This review is from: Gods of the New Age (Paperback)
The other negative reviews are obviously partial to the New Age System or have Hindu roots that find offense with the blunt exposure. Having a background in the Christian ministry of the occult and the unmasking of New Age propaganda, I find the material highly informative. It is a first hand account of a young English woman, reared in the tradition of Catholicism and growing up in India during the 70's. She departs from her childhood faith to embark on peer-related experiences during her younger years. While some of the content reflects on the fads and cultural events of that period, the overall content is as relevant today as it was then. The book is written in a story form, recounting adventures and sometimes shocking traditions found in the Hindu belief system. It is a great book from a non-educated perspective in the sense that she was not attempting to make a scholarly stand, but rather presents a biography of her experience. No Christian seeking to be informed should be without this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Look into the Practice of Yoga, September 8, 2005

This review is from: Gods of the New Age (Paperback)
This is an eye-opening and well-written book on the roots of the new age movement. It accurately presents the basis of common new age practices, such as yoga meditation. I highly recommend this book and the corresponding video, "Gods of the New Age," as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Reading From an Author Who's Been There, October 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Gods of the New Age (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book as a fascinating account of how the new age movement has infiltrated Western civilization. The author's description of life in India was enlightening and disturbing. Caryl's style of writing was so easy to read that I couldn't put this book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CONTROVERSIAL EVANGELICAL WRITER/FILMMAKER VIEWS THE "NEW AGE", June 16, 2011
This review is from: Gods of the New Age (Paperback)
Caryl Matrisciana is (along with her husband Pat) a founder of Jeremiah Films, and author/coauthor of books such as Out of India: A True Story about the New Age Movement and The God Makers II. The back cover describes her, "with her own background in drugs and Eastern mysticism, (she) ably investigates the roots, progress and probably future of the New Age phenomenon."

She wrote in the first chapter of this 1985 book, "The New Age. I was first introduced to it toward the end of the turbulent sixties. My family had just returned from India to our motherland, England. I was 20 years old. Of course there wasn't talk about an official 'New Age movement' then... And now, in retrospect, I can see how much I was caught up, persuaded, and transformed by its intrigue and excitement."

Here are some additional quotations from the book:

"I was once deeply committed to these New Age concepts myself, although I must admit in all sincerity that I did not understand their spiritual implications." (Pg. 26)
"'I mean, maybe God would rather that we DIDN'T eat meat.' 'No,' I smiled at her. 'In Genesis God gave man dominion over the animals. In Exodus He fed His children with quails. In Leviticus he told the Jews which animals to eat... Jesus ate fish and the Passover lamb...'" (Pg. 121)
"Gandhi was no different from most gurus today: He was a sexual pervert and was certainly not the nonviolent, peace-loving man depicted. This is demonstrated historically by his racial killings of blacks in the Kaffir Wars in South Africa." (Pg. 180)
"...this concept of healing energy is a basic occultic principle. Not only do Hindus and Buddhists believe it, but there are Christians like Agnes Sanford who promote it as well (e.g., in her book The Healing Light).

She blames Hinduism and yoga for her unbalances with drugs.
And when attacking hinduism, she never cites hindu scriptures nor any references books.
Really bad book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ironic Novel, September 8, 2009
By
Tia Morren (Cincinnati, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gods of the New Age (Paperback)
Interesting novel about a young woman who travels around the world, both literally and psychologically. The author experiences the caste system of India and relays her own selfish beliefs and her mixing with the "socially elite" with no excuse. She discusses various religions of the East, such as Hare Krishnas while describing them as "cults". She describes her ventures into drugs, her experience at the musical "Hair", and how she felt lost in her relationships.

Then the author describes her conversion into Christianity. The irony was not lost on me that her experiences during her conversion seemed no different to me than her previous experiences involved in other "cults". She left the US to return to a destructive marriage in the UK because the Bible stated God would not approve of her divorce. The hard questions are not answered. Now in her mind yoga, acupuncture, guided imagery, vegetarianism, and even "Star Wars" are evil occultish activities!

The author did fail to note that her rocky relationships, promiscuity, dabbled drug use, irresponsiblity, and lack of employment are not faults of any Eastern philosophy but inherent traits of her own. Christianity didn't "fix" her problems, it gave her a periphery focus instead of figuring out her own issues.

An interesting read, if only to get into the mind of a conservative Christian missionary in 1985.

I would recommend however that the author at least get the quotes correct from Star Wars!

1.0 out of 5 stars Clear and utter bigotry - disgusting, May 31, 2005
This review is from: Gods of the New Age (Paperback)
It amazes me that to produce a book and documentary which is not based on fact, written by someone who clearly has absolutely no intellectual knolwedge of the topics they are commenting on, and yet which presumes to label the world's most ancient religion as 'demonic' is even legal.

This is a documentary which tries to defame 1 billion people's ancient philsophical beliefs and portray them in a subhuman manner. There was clearly no research done into the subject, and if there was then this was a consious effort to produce a piece of racist material designed to miseducated masses of people. How hypocritical and infuriating that it tries to level similar claims on 'Eastern spirituality' - it sure shows the paranoia of some.

Evangelism is a 'cult' if anything, and if anything is related to the Third Reich it is bigoted propaganda like this. To superstitiously and dogmatically blame other faiths for events which were unrelated, show such ignorance of history, and also ignore that all evil in the world is caused by human nature and prejudice is dangerous. It is documenatries like this that breed Nazi brownshirt mentality.

This documentary is only fit for a KKK meeting or Nazi rally. I find this film offensive.
