5.0 out of 5 stars God Exalting!, January 27, 2011
This review is from: God's Passion for His Glory (Paperback Edition): Living the Vision of Jonathan Edwards (With the Complete Text of The End for Which God Created the World) (Paperback)
"God's Passion for His Glory" is actually two books in one. The first half is Piper sharing how Edward's book, "The End for which God Created the World" has impacted his theology over the years. The second half is the entire text of "The End for which God Created the World".

What is so great about the book is that Piper gives somewhat of a commentary of Edwards book in the beginning so you have a good foundation of what it's about before you read it. This is important for all non-Edwards scholars. In other words, Edward's thinks on another level, usually above the average thinker. He challenges you to think above your means and takes you to a new level. These are the types of books that produce right thinking about God and put us in our rightful place, fully dependent on him for everything and finding our ultimate joy in knowing him.

I actually never knew that Piper's famous quote "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him" pg 47, gets it's foundation from this quote of Edward's "The happiness of the creature consistes in rejoicing in God, by which also God is magnified and exalted." If this is understood it puts God in his right place as the object of our worship motivating us to do all things for his glory. And what's so good about this is when we glorify God and are delighting in him we are most joyful. So God's passion for his own glory shows that in fact he has a passion for our joy. They are not at odds.

There is no man-centered theology presented here. God will not give his glory to another. This book is God exalting and man humbling and yet it shows God's compassion and love for lost sinners! This book was very informative, helpful and rocked my thinking often. Get the book and be challenged, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant fellow., May 12, 2009
The first half of the work is going over the logic by which he proposes the Supreme Being would work (obviously the Christian God, but not necessarily so, at this point it is a little general). The second half brings in scripture, and Edwards goes through how scripture fits into his outline painted in the first section to display God's plan for the world.
A great book and a necessary read for Christians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of mind, May 14, 2009
This review is from: God's Passion for His Glory (Paperback Edition): Living the Vision of Jonathan Edwards (With the Complete Text of The End for Which God Created the World) (Paperback)
Another excellent, thought provoking book from John Piper. His first four chapters were actually quite helpful to me when reading Edward's work, as I could see the points that Piper belives are there, review Edwards' biography, and see Piper's experience with him and what meaning is there. Be warned: this is not a book for the faint of mind. Section 1 of Edward's work is difficult to get through, mostly because we don't think that way anymore. This is a book which I will need to read multiple times to fully grasp - but offers a very compelling vision of what Christianity could be.
