Book Description

November 16, 2009
"
When a believer and a non-believer discuss religion, they are both usually talking to deaf ears. Each is convinced that the other is misguided, and that his or her views can therefore be dismissed with disdain.
That is the way it might have been between the two young people at the centre of this story, had it not been for one thing: John is in love with Yvette. Only by treating Yvettes's belief with respect, does John stand any chance of dissuading her from her determination to become a nun.
What he does is basically to say "OK. Let's assume that everything the Bible says is correct. How can we then explain these observable facts, which appear to contradict the Bible?" He tries to say it, of course, in a more imaginative—and humorous— way. In the course of doing so, John comes up with several intriguing new ideas, presented here for the first time. Their discussions take place against a backdrop of winter wonderland and boistrous Christmas celebrations.
The notes at the back of the book are in no way essential to the understanding or enjoyment of the story. They are provided solely for the benefit of those unfortunate souls (the author must sheepishly confess to being amongst their number) who are unable to relax until they have checked out the facts for themselves.

Topics given extensive coverage in the end notes include (but are not limited to)

  • The Infinite Monkey Theorem
  • The Stauffenberg plot to assassinate Hitler
  • Bride of Christ
  • The postulated dual nature (God and man) of Jesus
  • Contradictions in the Bible
  • Logical proof that in any system which contains a contradiction it is possible to prove anything
  • Basic tenets of Muslim belief

4.0 out of 5 stars If you love Christmas and/or are interested in discussing religion, this is the book for you!, February 14, 2011

This review is from: God's Tin Soldiers: A theological romance between a reluctant atheist and a prospective Catholic nun. Christian apologetics or a love story? Both! Is Christmas the new religion? What about Islam? (Paperback)
John Cunningham is a very Christian atheist. He has abandoned the faith of his youth, not because of any atheist arguments to which he has been exposed, but because he himself has reluctantly come to the conclusion that the doctrines of Christianity are untenable.

It is these doctrines that John and Yvette discuss on their walks through snowy winter landscapes in the Eastern Townships of Canada. There are also lively discussions around the fireplace and at the dinner table with the other members of John's family in the warm Christian atmosphere pervading the Cunninghams' lakeside cottage during the Christmas season.

Christian readers will be challenged to counter John's arguments against their faith. Atheist readers will be challenged to counter Yvette's arguments. Seekers will find a lot to think about.

And everyone will enjoy a nostalgic love story that relies not on explicit sex, but old-fashioned story-telling for its appeal.

MacLean has managed to write about a very touchy subject, and not only does he not offend anyone, whether staunch believer or not,but the reader's attention is very firmly held by the seemingly impossible situation in which the two main characters find themselves. One finds one self sadly sympathetic with both of them, and wishing with all one's heart that a solution could be found. What does happen is a surprise which makes the book well worth reading to find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Winter Read!, December 10, 2010

This is a lovely nostalgic story set in the snowy north, perfect to read over the holidays, curled up on the couch. You can feel the crunch of the snow and the crackling of the fire. It has romance, enough philosophy to be interesting and a good helping of suspence. It would appeal to a wide age range, from teens to seniors: the teens would learn about relationships and the seniors will relive old memories.
