4.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for the giant monster fan!, October 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Godzilla 2-Pack - Godzilla & Mothra: Battle for Earth/Gozilla vs. King Ghidorah [VHS] (VHS Tape)
GvM is an up to date re-inventing of the classic battle between two of the greatest movie monsters of all time. A big plus to this movie is Battra, a new monster who is one of the most powerful characters in the Godzilla universe. GvM delivers what any kid (grown up or not) could want in a giant monster battle.

I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWER. "GODZILLA & MOTHRA"
WAS A VERY ENJOYABLE MOVIE. THE BIG G IS MAGNIFICENT AS USUAL
AND MOTHRA IS SO CUTE IT LOOKS LIKE A BIG STUFFED TOY. BATTRA ON THE OTHER HAND IS A VICIOUS LOOKING THING WITH A HORNS. THE
MUSIC IS GOOD AND THE LITTLE GIRLS ARE O.K. BUT I PREFER THE ORIGINAL ONES. I RECOMMEND IT.
I HAVE SEEN IT SEVERAL TIMES AND WILL WATCH IT AGAIN.
THE OTHER MOVIE ABOUT KING GHIDORAH IS TRULY LOUSY...A REAL WASTE OF TIME.

Still cheesy but a good and enjoyable film... this was the first film I've seen with Mothra and Battra and I thought they weren't all great but I was wrong...

This is the third entry in the Heisei Godzilla series (the 1990's, for those unfamiliar with kaiju-speak), and it is a good one. Lifting parts of the plot of the original 1964 "Mothra vs. Godzilla", the movie actually focuses more on Mothra and its new dark twin Battra more than Godzilla, with somewhat mixed results. The special effects are quite good for the year (1992-3), and the brief presence of old Godzilla stalwart Akira Takarada is very welcome. This movie is not quite as good as its predecessor ("G vs. King Ghidora", which was probably the best of the newer series), but it stands on its own quite well, and would be a good film to introduce young children to the wonderful world of kaiju eiga.

SIDE NOTES: Mothra's return (1st movie since 1968) was received so well in Japan that it spawned three further Mothra movies, the last of which was released in 1998. Also, if you want to see some of Akira Takarada's work outside monster movies, he had a very good role as the hotel manager being blackmailed by the yakuza in 1993's "Minbo: The Gentle Art Of Japanese Extortion".
