A great Modern Day 'G' movie,
By
This review is from: Godzilla Vs Biollante [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Godzilla 1985 started a revolution. Evil Godzilla returned! The way he was meant to be. In the next installment of the evil 'zilla series, it is a few hours after Godzilla's deadly attack on Japan. A team of scientists collects some Godzilla cells from a scale found in the rubble. A spy from a terrorist nation tries to steal it. A few confusing moments later, we are thrown 5 years into the future. A scientist who lost his daughter in a lab explosion is experimenting with genetic mutation. He blends the Godzilla cell with a rose-bush cell. The result: A mutated, radioactive plant growing at an alarming rate. Shortly thereafter, Godzilla awakens from the volcano we saw him fall into in Godzilla 1985. When he attacks Tokyo and destroys Biollante, we find that Biollante is not just a monster, but actually holds a closer relationship to the professor than he thinks. Later on toward the end, after Godzilla does his rampaging, Biollante returns, a terrifying sight to behold. Biollante is one of my favorite 'G' enemies, as it is terrifying to look at and is very large and intimidating. The movie tends to drag at times, but the fights are well worth it. And if you are a 'G' fan to begin with, you appreciate these movies no matter what. The soundtrack is also very good. Definitely worth buying for G fans!

Plant vs. Lizard!!!!!! Who will win?,
By T. Zinkle "volmama" (east TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Godzilla Vs Biollante [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The answer to the title question is Biollante (plant). A dr. creates a giant plant using Godzilla's cells. Like every other Godzilla movie, Godzilla battles Biollante. Biollante battles Godzilla in his Rose form. Godzilla beats Biollante and Biollante seems to die (yeah right). Godzilla does some damage and about thirty minutes later Godzilla battles Biollante final form. They have a pretty good fight, but in the end, Biollante forces Godzilla to retreat from battle. Biollante then turns into cells and they go up into space. It is a direct sequel from Godzilla 1985. I like this movie alot. I wish it were out on DVD.

Third best of Hesei (5th best in all)Cheers The great design for Biollante. Jeers The Japanese Colonel, who, while quite clever, allows an assassin to not only destroy the ANB but also kill several people under his watch AND lets him get away! Rating 5 out of 5

This 1989 entry was the second film of the Heisei Godzilla series ("Godzilla 1985" being the first), and should be commended for its ambition, although it is by no means a perfect film. Like many other G-films, it's a hybrid of a giant monster movie and an environmental morality play: in this case, a warning against the dangers of genetic engineering. Once again, Godzilla returns to face off against another massive rival, Biollante, which is a cross between a rose bush and a radioactive Godzilla-Cell. The idea of the big G tangling with a giant plant is a good one, although the initial Biollante design falls a little short--the victim of budget constraints, as is often the case in these sort of movies. The dubbing is actually pretty good, although the action moves somewhat slowly at times. Godzilla himself is impressive, and the battles between himself the Super X-2 battle machine, as well as Biollante (in its massive, final form at the end of the movie) are as well. This is one of the better entries in the Heisei series.

A really weird storyline but terrific special effects,

This is the weirdest Godzilla movie I have ever seen. This isn't just Godzilla rampaging; there are plots and subplots galore, making it the most complex, confusing movie in the whole series. The action picks up where Godzilla 1985 left off; scientists collect some Godzilla cells from the scene, only to have it stolen by some mysterious guys, who in turn have it stolen from them. The cells make their way to a fictitious Arab nation to be used for genetic research. The scientist in charge never gets to start work, however, because the lab gets blown up (along with his daughter). Five years later, one set of bad guys rigs up a series of explosions that free Godzilla. The government hires yet another lab to make a bacteria that will destroy nuclear energy, hoping they can use the bacteria to defeat Godzilla. The scientist I mentioned agrees to help the effort in exchange for a week's time working with some other Godzilla cells. He combines the regenerative Godzilla cells with some flower cells, and before you know it there is a gigantic plant out in the bay. That's not really the weird part, though. Although no one at all questions how or why he did it, the scientist somehow combined the spirit of his dead daughter with the flower cells. Thus, the "monster" Biollante is part flower, part female scientist, and part Godzilla. All of this leads up, of course, to a fight between Biollante (with its dangerous vines and Godzilla-mouth appendages) battling Godzilla while the Japanese attempt to thwart the big lizard for good. You would think that Godzilla would have a pretty easy time with a plant for a foe, but of course this plant shares Godzilla's own genetic makeup. The deeply-layered plots are a little too murky for my tastes, and the abilities of Biollante border on the ridiculous, but the special effects are by far the best of all Godzilla movies up to this point. The technology used in this film far surpasses that of previous movies, even though I must say I rather miss scenes using blatantly obvious models. Godzilla's head does strike me as a little small, but most people will probably like the new look. This movie is the first one released after Godzilla 1985, so it marks the real beginnings of the new Godzilla series in which Godzilla is all about destruction for its own sake. I would recommend this movie for the special effects alone, but most people should also appreciate a plot that is vastly different from what has come before (it's confusing, but it's not necessarily a bad storyline). I would note a couple of other things, and because of the dubbing I don't know if these were added for the American version or if they also appeared in the original Japanese release. First, as far as I know this is the first Godzilla film featuring some foul language--it's just PG language, but it was sort of strange to hear it here. Second, there is one moment in the film that is completely unforgivable, but all I can say is that it involves a campy, totally artificial sound added quite unnecessarily to a scene.

A darkly poetic movie.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Godzilla Vs Biollante [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This second film of the second Godzilla series(the Heisei series), following Godzilla 1985, has thankfully been released without any serious alterations. It is a darkly poetic tale that cautions against abusing scientific knowledge. If we ignore this, the filmmakers say, monsters will be born. The plot is complex and multi-layered, giving the characters more to do than just stand around as the monsters battle each other. The film succeeds in bringing the plight of a nation under seige, from without and within, home to the viewer. Biollante, while initially just a giant plant, soon mutates into an ugly and fearsome beast. Godzilla looks absolutely awesome! Koichi Kawakita has designed a Godzilla that is powerful, majestic, and very life-like. All of the effects are excellent, recalling spfx master Eiji Tsubaraya's classic work. The suitamation, pyrotechnic, and miniature work is worlds better than the over-hyped CGI technique and displays more heart and care than most bloated big studio dreck. This film, though not the best of the G series, is still an exciting kaiju adventure! END

Biollante is my favrite creature. This is the best BIG G movie. In this movie Biollante is created by a bio physicist. This movie is the best movie made by TOHO. The movie introduces the character named Miki which is in the next few movies. I wish that TOHO made more GODZILLA"KING OF THE MONSTER"movies so we say are farewell to GODZILLA and say hello to the new stupid computer generation, unrealistic godzilla.

A great Godzilla movie,
By paul woods (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Godzilla Vs Biollante [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie is one of the few Godzilla movies that can be enjoyed by all audiences. The movie is very serious in tone and has good special effects (for its time--1989). The monster fighting is short, but not cheesy at all (unlike many of the Godzilla movies).DON'T READ BELOW IF YOU DON'T WANT A SPOILER ON GODZILLA 1985 The plot starts out shortly after Godzilla was imprisoned inside a volcano (in Godzilla 1985). Scientists are doing research on Godzilla cells/DNA, when terrorists blow up the lab, killing the head scientist's daughter and destroying the cells. Years later Godzilla is beginning to stir inside the volcano. Japan creates bio-engineered bacteria that feed on Nuclear Radiation (ie, Godzilla). But the head scientist uses the technology to attempt to revive his dead daughter. The result is a bio-engineered monster named Biollante--half Godzilla, half plant. Long story short, terrorists wanting the bio-technology threaten to release Godzilla from the volcano and accidentally do. The rest of the movie deals with the consequences of the scientists' unorthodox, immoral practices. The movie has a very real message and a serious plot that eludes most other Godzilla films. The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because the VHS is of poor quality.

A great follow-up to "Godzilla 1985". SYNOPSIS: Terrorists steal G-cells from the wreckage of Tokyo. A scientist, Dr. Shiragami, loses his daughter Erika in an unlikely lab explosion at the lab where he works. Five years later, he merges her DNA with a rose bush. General Kiroki recruits people, including Colonel Gondo, to make Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria, a weapon hopefully to be used against Godzilla upon his return. Dr. Shiragami joins the team and merges Erika's DNA/rosebush cells with Godzilla cells. One night at Dr. Shiragami's, Bio-Major, a company that tried to steal G-cells earlier on, once again tries to steal--this time information on Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria. A Saradian agent, SSS9, ambushes them, because he wants it too. A huge tentacle kills one Bio-Major officer, and the other officer jumps out a window in order to escape. The strange tentacle nearly kills SSS9, but SSS9 cuts the tentacle in two with a pocket knife. In the morning, a fellow scientist working on the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria project discovers what Shiragami's done. A psychic, Miki Saegusa, and her friend run a school for psychic children. They ask what their dream was last night, and they keep having the same dream every night since then and every night it's become clearer. They were asked to illustrate their dream and it turns out to be Godzilla coming out of a volcano. Miki senses Godzilla in Mt. Mihara. Bio-Major threatens the Japanese government to give them the A.N.E.B. (Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria), or else they will detonate Mt. Mihara with explosives, thus causing Godzilla to escape. An explosion rocks the land from Mt. Mihara, a warning explosion. So Colonel Gondo and the fellow scientist go to get it, and give him the A.N.E.B. To deactivate the explosives and their timer, they must go in back of the man's truck. Just then, SSS9 attacks, and the trucker tries to get away, but SSS9 shoots a tire of the truck and the truck topples over. As Gondo tries to deactivate the explosives, SSS9 steals the A.N.E.B. They can't stop the explosives and Godzilla is released once again. However, a huge form named Biollante has the soul of Erika. It has formed in Lake Ashino, in Dr. Shiragami's backyard. It has millions of the tendrils that killed the Bio-Major guy earlier on. Meanwhile out at sea, air craft carriers and helicopters attack Godzilla, but they are destroyed. Super X2, equipped with a fire mirror that can repel Godzilla's radioactive heat ray twice as powerful, is sent out and overwhelms Godzilla, who dives underwater. Biollante calls Godzilla and Godzilla emerges from the depths of the sea. Super-X2 fires off torpedoes, and then their fire mirror is badly damaged. Godzilla then burns the Super-X2 with a heat ray, and is not fased by its missiles as a counterattack. Godzilla hits Super-X2 with his tail and Super-X2 is badly damaged and will have to be piloted back to base by the army. Godzilla hears Biollante taunting it and heads to Lake Ashino, and he and Biollante do battle. We are informed by Shiragami that they are both the same creature, bearing the same cells, and are not siblings. Godzilla wins the battle, roasting Biollante on fire with heat rays, but not after Biollante uses his mouthed tendrils to her every advantage. Godzilla eventually emerges in Osaka and destroys it, and when a mission involving A.N.E.B.-loaded rocket launchers fails, Colonel Gondo is killed, as he was in the operation and had one of the key rocket launchers. However, the A.N.E.B. rockets did hit Godzilla and he was infected by it. Godzilla heads to the countryside, where Dr. Shiragami hopes that by stepping on particular mines, artifical lightning is formed and attacks Godzilla and lowers his body temperature (or heightens it, I can't remember) so the A.N.E.B. can take effect. Godzilla destroys lines of army tanks, missile-launcher mounted tanks, and maser cannon-mounted tanks, and helicopters. Then, an even more powerful Biollante arrives for revenge on what Godzilla did earlier. Biollante sprays Godzilla with burning sap, similar to what occurred earlier in the Lake Ashino battle at the hands of a mouthed tendril. The A.N.E.B. takes effect after Godzilla nearly destroys Biollante. Godzilla retreats to the ocean and literally falls in to get his bearings together. Biollante dies and Erika leaves her inhuman embodiment to head to Haven. Dr. Shiragami watches in awe, but is killed by SSS9. SSS9 steps on a mine which generates artificial lightning, after being chased in a car and on foot by the other protagonist--the scientist. All is well as the scientist and his girlfriend stay united, and Godzilla leaves Japan. Then the moral of the story is shared as Dr. Shiragami's corpse is shown in an army medical tent. REVIEW: One of the good Heisei Godzilla films. However some parts of the film were rather boring, but the special effects and music make up for that. The idea for reintroducing Super X is rather stupid and campy, but has positive and negative edges to it. Godzilla still bears his "Heisei" roar which he first acquired in Godzilla 1985, the previous film. I was only a few years of age when I rented this from Blockbuster, and in addition I rented 1957's "Godzilla Raids Again", which is a very scarce Godzilla video, wouldn't all fellow G-fans agree? C'mon, G-fans, I know you're out there! E-mail me.

Entertaining Kaiju,

While a far cry from Godzilla 1985, this movie is good in terms of Kaiju! Complicated story which is actually one of the best in the series. Ultra cool monster! Biollante is Godzilla's biggest foe yet! She is one of the most complicated, too. She has a human spirit. In the rose form, she was helpless. But as the Reptillian/plant hybrid form, she put up an impressive fight! Super X 2 attack vehicle was even cooler than Super X! One interesting part is that there is no country known as Saradia. Hm... all in all a good effort and a great film for Kaiju fans!
