5.0 out of 5 stars Frank, Zornow and Mowry do it again!!!!, May 11, 2014
This review is from: Godzilla: Rulers of Earth Volume 2 (Paperback)
I previously reviewed Rulers of Earth Volume 1 and I think it was. Volume 2 might be even better because it features more monster action and debuts of fan favorites like Jet Jaguar, Biollante, Varan and both the Gargantuas. If that isn't enough, then the fantastic art by Matt Frank and Jeff Zornow will. Without giving away to much, I give you a run down of each issue.

Issue #5 features Varan on a rampage in China and is chasing Lucy and her team. Rodan comes in and fights Varan until they come across a hidden base. Inside the base are scientists studying a captured Gaira, the Green Gargantua. When Varan breaks into the base, Gaira escapes and the two monsters do battle. Despite Gaira being smaller than most of the other kaijus, he puts up a heck of a fight against the much bigger Varan. The return of Gaira was such a big surprise to me and I began to feel like a little kid again watching War of the Gargantuas. The addition of Rodan to this issue was also a nice touch. This is so far the only issue in which Jeff Zornow is in charge of the art and he does a wonderful job. It's pretty hard to tell the difference between Frank's art and Zornow's art, but there are times when certain characters are drawn differently. But the monsters are drawn great, especially Gaira.

Issue #6 marks the return of Gigan, this time rebuilt and upgraded to his Final Wars look. The upgraded Gigan attacks Las Vegas until our favorite King of the Monsters arrives to fight. Things look bad for Godzilla at first until the military sends their new weapon Moguera (from Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla 1994) to help even the odds. The brief fight between Gigan and Moguera was actually the highlight for me, because both characters have blade like hands and they use them against each other is a funny way. While Godzilla is down, the aliens steal more of Godzilla's DNA and create Orga (from Godzilla 2000). Orga is crazy monster that's out of control and it leads to another highlight which I won't spoil, but it involves him and Gigan.

Issue #7 marks the debut of cult fan favorite, Jet Jaguar from Godzilla vs. Megalon. It was a fun treat to see him and he retains his smile. Like the movie, Jet Jaguar and Godzilla go against the rampaging Gigan which is of course the highlight of the issue with Gigan getting his butt stomped by both JJ and G. Unlike the movie however, the alliance between Godzilla and Jet Jaguar is uneasy and brief which is a nice twist and it makes the ending to this issue a bit funnier.

Issue #8 is the last issue of this volume. I'll admit, it wasn't as great as the final issue of Volume 1; but I still enjoy it. This issue marks the debut of Biollante (from Godzilla vs. Biollante 1989). This time, Biollante is a bio weapon created by the aliens. Godzilla arrives and dukes it out with his planet clone. The fight is very good, but isn't anything too new here. This time however, Godzilla is the definite where as the in the film; it was more or less a draw (though Godzilla did get the final blow). Again, it's good read; but nothing too new.

Overall, RoE volume 2 is a must have for Godzilla fans. Issue 5 was a huge highlight for me and it made me feel like a child again. Matt Frank's art is a show stealer here as always. For your a big Godzilla fan (and waiting for the new film), get this book now.

Amazing artwork! Fast paced in terms of plot and the art is as stunning as ever! New monsters are added to the story including one of my favorites, biollante. Though the fight was short, the art always makes up for it!

I love that these are getting out so quickly in a collection, I started reading the regular editions as digital, it is nice to have a physical copy of them.
