5.0 out of 5 stars It's not Dutch to me, July 5, 2004

This review is from: The Goede Vrouw of Mana-Ha-Ta: At Home and in the Society, 1609-1760 (American Women: Images and Realities) (Hardcover)
Don't be put off by this book's title; it's just Mrs. Van Rensselaer teaching you a Dutch phrase. This book is a delight. It is wonderful for genealogists, histroy buffs and people who love to find out origins of words and phrases. She describes New Amsterdam with such a light touch, one almost forgets how short lived it was. When the reader steps back and considers how familiar the words, phrases, and customs seem; she will begin to appreciate the enormous impact this small slice of American history really had on the development of our nation. Top it off with the current tribute to New Amsterdam, Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto.
