5.0 out of 5 stars Here is a great modern rock record., January 12, 2000
This review is from: Goesaroundcomesaround (Audio CD)
Fono's "Goesaroundcomesaround" is a solid modern rock effort. Though there's a consistency throughout the songs, each one brings something new to the table. From the sunny acoustic-pop of "Something must be happening" to the spunky power pop of "Round and Round" to the mid-tempo anthem "Drift Away". "Collide" deceptively begins with an nod towards electronica before shifting towards a raw rock song, and "Splendid" is a confident ballad. Even my least favorite songs (Strangest thing, Now she's 24) are good tracks that are overshadowed by an album of excellent songs. Even the hidden track, (in the age of cheesy hidden tracks) is a keeper. Overall, this album is one of the best Christian releases I've ever heard, and I'm looking forward to future records from these guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fono where are you?, April 14, 2003
By
This review is from: Goesaroundcomesaround (Audio CD)
Ok, this CD was released in 1999. That's four years ago. The question I'm left asking is, Fono, where are you?!
This CD is truely awesome. At the time of it's release, before I heard it, I thought they were just another band released to sell off the uprising of rock. I was greatly mistaken. To me, this album is best described as "catchy." When I first got this CD, I was headed back home on a five hour roadtrip. I can honestly say that I was listening to two CD's the whole time. This one, and "40 Acres," by Caedmon's Call. The two sound nothing alike for those wondering. Anyway, I listened only to those two, and on that trip I listened to the Caedmon's Call CD once through. The rest of the trip was Fono and only Fono.
My advice is this. Click above and listen to the samples. If any little part sounds good, buy the CD. Any parts you don't like will grow on you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Color me surprised, July 13, 2000
This review is from: Goesaroundcomesaround (Audio CD)
I went to a music store and began listening to the demo CDs. Mostly stuff that wasn't familiar. Tried the new Earthsuit and some other bands and didn't like 'em. Then I popped this into the CD player and wow, talk about a hook.

The first song has a very good chorus, good enough to make me open the lyrics and memorize it right in the store. Also, I appreciated the techno intro (it actually says "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" if you listen closely). There is a thing in graphic design called "distress" (such as distressed type) which is where you deliberately try to create a weathered, fuzzy, or otherwise mutilated look. You can do this in music too, although people usually refer to it as distortion or feedback. U2 really nailed that kind of sound with Achtung Baby. And so here on the first song, the intro reminds me of that quite a lot (not of U2 but of the distorted sound). Sometimes it can really make a song stand out.

In fact, that's what I like about this whole album. While it does have some Goo Goo Dolls choruses, the music itself is less perfected, more tense with energy. And with a harder edge. I also enjoyed the way the band wasn't "just rock" but seemed comfortable to craft in some heavy beats or alternative sounds.

This may be too obscure, but if you've heard of Chasing Furies, you may find Fono to be a band in the same league. They don't have the piano work, but the guitar work is similar, and the singing is just as compelling, although Fono has a male singer.

Finally, the song Alcatraz is just as good as other reviewers have suggested. The lyrics are short and clear, but very inspiring. If you need some strength, this may be the song you need to hear.

5.0 out of 5 stars This British band kicks butt, September 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Goesaroundcomesaround (Audio CD)
Goesaround comes is the best record I've bought for along time. At last something fresh and new to listen to, with incredible melodies that move and haunt you.

This band have the ability to think and that's obvious from the start of the CD. At first I wasn't sure what I had bought because the album starts with a drum loop, then it transforms into 'Collide' a Who packed tune that the Foo Fighters would be proud of.

Alcatraz is undescribable with it's powerful ethos as it grabs you and takes you away. The record ends with a sweet little ditty 'goesaroundcomesaround'......check these guys out.

Perfect is all I can think of to describe this CD. Great pop/rock radio friendly sound. Very catchy hooks. All 12 songs are great no need to skip songs on this CD. I can't wait for them to put out a new CD. If you like the Goo Goo Dolls you'll like this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, August 21, 2000

Fono popped onto the scene from no where. I saw them at a concert, no wonder why they caught on. They are a tight new band. The concert was an energetic show. They had more distortion in concert with the guitars which was great when they jammed out. It's well worth the five star credit. If you want a well produced cd, that's not only tight sounding and well written lyric-wise, choose this one. For a while I didn't listen to it, then I took it out one day and was surprised ever more.

It took two spins to like it, three spins to love it...This album throws out some hooks that still won't let go. Fono's vocals and instrumentation-- though not as deep or thought-provoking as a group like Radiohead--managed to draw me in and demand additional spins. The lyrics may not be strongly evangelistic, but they do offer hope, and they do speak of Christ. Compared to some of the secular bands I've heard, God's Spirit shines bright through this music. I've claimed "Alcatraz," the fourth track, as my present anthem against the sinful nature that so often tries to take over my thought processes. I'd much rather "breathe in--breathe out" the truth of God's love. Way to go, Fono.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time fave CDs, December 6, 2003
This review is from: Goesaroundcomesaround (Audio CD)
I got this CD after listening to it at a local Christian bookstore. I was looking through this comparison list and it said they sounded like Bush (which, they don't... they're MUCH better). Anyways, I put it in, and was blown away. While there is nothing extremely intricate or complicated about their music, they put all they have into it. "Collide" starts things off mellow, before breaking into the riff. Every other song kept me interested, but "Alcatraz" is what really got me. Again, nothing complicated, but one of my favorite songs (this and "Drift Away"). The riff is simple yet powerful. I love the vocals and lyrics on the whole album. I can't wait till a new CD comes out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of 99, March 11, 2002
This review is from: Goesaroundcomesaround (Audio CD)
Where have these guys been all my life? This is great stuff. Foo Fighters fans eat your hearts out! For a trio, these guys are really tight. The mix is wonderful, everything is full and 'in-your-face'. The songwriting is exceptional. When are these guys going to release another disc? The essence of melodic/power rock. Highly recommended.

I saw Fono play at an MP3 tour in Visalia California with 5 other bands. GooGoo Dolls were the frontliners and let me tell you that by far Fono and Tonic stole the show. The boys from London sound great live, they are hot and nice as well. I bought their CD at the show and they where gracious enough to sign it for me. If you ever get the chance to see them perform you won't be dissappointed. Keep it up guys, looking forward to hearing your next album and hopefully seeing you guys on the charts!
