In putting together this extremely useful volume, Robert Maguire has pursued a complex set of aims--to illumilnate Gogol's art in ways that must be a novel for readers who do not know Russian, to represent the principal approaches of Russian twentieth-century criticism, and at the same time to cover all of Gogol's major writings.
