Biography

"It was definitely an emotional experience, and it was the most fun I've ever had making a record," Kenny Wayne Shepherd says of his aptly-titled new album, Goin' Home, scheduled for release May 19, 2014 on Concord Records. "I felt like I was retracing my steps back to where it all began." (International release dates may vary)

At least fifty-per-cent of my non- work life… when I’m not visiting my family is built around… and immersed… in the electric blues. I simply love it! I read about it… study it… listen to it… watch it… talk about it… and pass it on to other generations. Unfortunately… there are just not that many new electric blues performers… and if there is… they’re not being publicized correctly. And… if truth be told… a couple of artists who do perform some blues… who have gotten some followers… and publicity… vehemently… and smugly… try to distance themselves… from being “tagged”… “An electric blues performer”! I won’t dignify them… by putting their names here… but I will paraphrase quotes from two of them… and if you’re into electric blues… you can probably figure out who they are: (One in response to a reporter’s question… “Do you consider yourself an electric blues singer… said”)… “I don’t define what I sing”… another… in response to a similar question… said: “I sing all types of music.”

If you’re wondering why I’m broaching this subject… it’s because it is so freakin’ refreshing… to have a CD release like this… that salutes the beauty… and power… of *TRUE-ELECTRIC-BLUES*… on so many levels!

Goin' Home is just freaking awesome from start to finish. I was somewhat apprehensive at first because of all the duets/guests that it wouldn't be a true KWS band experience album, but Goin' Home has blown me away. I've been listening to it non stop since it came out and the phenomenal playing by Kenny is just spectacular and I literally found myself getting high listening to it. I love the great variety of awesome killer bluesy strat tones throughout the album. I think KWS did an excellent job mixing up both the tones and flavors of his playing and soloing all through the album.

I've never been a huge fan of Kenny's vocals, not that I don't think he can sing (because he absolutely can) I just prefer Noah's vocals. That being said, I really enjoyed both "House is Rockin" and absolutely LOVED "Boogie Man". The solo in "You Cant Judge A Book" at about 1:30 might me my favorite solo in the album, that tone is just freaking killer!

I also love the seemingly increased use of piano in this album. In my opinion the piano isn't used enough in modern Texas style blues and I love that Kenny included it here on Goin' Home.

Overall, I think this is the best album put out by KWS thus far. Noah is great as always, and I really enjoyed the various guests they brought on for this album. My favorites are Keb Mo and Warren Haynes.

Kenny, you seriously enhance and bring joy to my life with your music. I know that may seem slightly fanatic (lol) but its gods own truth. Your music just has a way of captivating me in the incredible power of the blues.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd has put together a group of Blues songs from what he considers the masters of Blues. His choice of and his interpretation of those songs is outstanding. His linear notes are also worth reading. This is a extremely well produced CD with an interesting use of guest musicians. This would be an interesting start album for someone interested in discovering the Blues, or an excellent CD for someone that is already a Blues fan.

I typically don't like "compilation" CD's (or whatever they're called) because the artists often butcher the originals in a way that makes me wish I had just listened to the original instead. This album is different and while sufficiently honoring originals, they add just enough interesting new twists to these songs. Sounds quality is nice (not over-produced). On most CD's I am lucky if I can find 2 songs that make the permanent rotation, but I love almost everything about this one from start to finish.

High points:
Palace of the King - unreal guitar tone and and brass adds to song
Guest appearances are nice (especially Keb Mo and Haynes)
Good variety of styles throughout
Great keyboards (guitar is a given)
Lost a Good Thing extended guitar solo
Still a Fool - guitar solos and that octave tone!
Noah's vocals good throughout

Low points:
Over wah'd solo in Cut You Loose didn't seem to fit the song
Boogie Man (just not my favorite - KWS vocals work better on House is Rockin' IMO)

Best CD I have purchased for at least three years - highly recommended!

Every cut on this disc is a winner. I wish Pride and Joy had been chosen for the tribute to SRV instead of House is Rockin', but that's a minor quibble. If you love the Blues like I do, then Goin' Home is a must-have for your music collection.
