Biography

The American blues musician Muddy Waters was born McKinley Morganfield in Mississippi in 1913. His first recording was made for the Library of Congress who had sent famed folk music archivist Alan Lomax to the Southern States to record examples of blues songs. On hearing the record Waters realised that being a musician was an achievable dream and set his sights on a career in music. Waters moved… Read more in Amazon's Muddy Waters Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden treasure, September 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Goin Way Back (Audio CD)
I picked this CD up on a whim. A have had little success with other "And Friends" style collections, so I was a little leery when I read the liner notes. A musicologist caught Muddy's band live in '67 at a club in Montreal. After the show he mentioned that it would be nice if they would have a "porch party" at the Rooming house they were staying at. To his surprise the band thought it would be a good idea and set it up for the next day. The fellow showed up with a tape recorder and one tape. The sound is not great on this, but the music is magical. Muddy, his voice and an acoustic guitar sitting around jamming with the rest of his band who are all playing acoustic guitars, including Keyboard player Otis Spann. The tape just keeps rolling and catches the dialogue, the coughs, the bottleneck slide banging against the neck. But most of all it catches the Delta roots of the man who invented Chicago blues. It is fresh and heartfelt. It put me in mind of what it must have been like when Son House, Willie Brown, Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson decided to play a few tunes for their own enjoyment as opposed to performing. I would recommend this CD strongly to anyone who likes acoustic blues.

I have to agree with previous review, this is a rare gem indeed. Yes its from an old sixties reel-to-reel recorder....but what was captured is worth the dip in quality. Can you imagine asking Muddy Waters if you could tape him playing and hanging out,all acoustic, after hours with his band, AND HE AGREES!! This is a great addition to any Muddy fans collection...I would not start with this if you don't own any Muddy, but if you love this man, get this CD. I love the begining. "Are you ready?"Muddy asks...."Yeah" unknown man..."Crazy" Muddy says....and thus begins down home back to his roots muddy music! Otis Spann singing and playing acoustic guitar is worth it as well! Span on Guitar! "Crazy"
