Product Description

Amazon.com

In this live CD recorded at Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Jamaican-born pianist Monty Alexander creates enough positive vibes and explosive star-showers to light up the Empire State Building. Completing a trinity of Caribbean-inflected recordings that includes Stir It Up and Monty Meets Sly and Robbie, Alexander--whose sparse finger work is beautifully lithe and expressive--leads his crackling band on Goin' Yard through quaking reggae grooves, spacey dub blowouts, plaintive ballads, and rocking riddim escapades. Not for the faint of heart is the interstellar storm of Augustus Pablo's "King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown," presented here as a knockout tribute to the ages, a dubbed-out rhythm fest between Alexander and percussionist Robert Thomas, Jr. and drummer Desmond Jones that is electric. Here's a Caribbean conversation of high-spirited, finger-popping joy. Similarly, Bob Marley's "Exodus" and "Could You Be Loved" are epic travelogues of cosmically charged Jamaican grooves, majestic melodies, and deep-knuckled improvisation. There are contemplative moments ("Trust"), as well as laid-back, humorous asides ("Skankin' Lennox" recalls the Harlem Globetrotters theme), but it's those gritty rhythm wars, like the sound of music magicians dispensing magic dust, that make Goin' Yard so compelling. The album closes with the genteel classic "Day-O," but this is no rustic folk ditty, rather it's an exotic, fire-under-the-toes feel-good riff that tilts the ending up, way up and kickin'. --Ken Micallef

This is my first foray into jazz-reggae fusion and "Going Yard" did not disappoint. The less than subtle Jamaican rhythm section with the prominent bass guitar and crackling hand drums induce more basic emotions that constrast nicely with the light sophistication of Monty Alexander's piano. This is also the first time that I've heard M. Alexander's music and he is a talented performer. With his left hand anchoring the chord progressions, his right is free to playfully dance through the various melodies.
The selections are all pretty good, although in my opinion, the band is at its best when everyone is jamming hard. These include Tracks 2 & 7 which are my favorites among the original compositions. The two Bob Marley covers are also very well done (except for the cheesy vocals in the second half of "Could You Be Loved")
All in all, the CD was an excellent live recording and it has encouraged me to explore more of Monty's music as well as other jazz-reggae fusions.

mr. alexander brings the caribbean to jazz, but rather than follow the afro-cuban route pioneered by dizzy gillespie, kenny dorham, or chu valdes, he blends reggae with jazz. the result is a bouncing, rhythm-driven affair sure to make you wiggle in your seat. this set was recorded live in pittsburgh adding to the fire of the music. stylistically, mr. alexander follows tommy flanagan's touch on straight-ahead jazz (elegant swing)with the opening "The Serpent" and "Sight Up!" being particular highlights. however, when he pays tribute to bob marley ("exodus" and "could you be loved"), mr. alexander captures the intensity and danceability of reggae perfectly, firing some great solos over the top of the 2/2 beat. the sound is unique, original, and fresh, something this age of neo-classicism in jazz desperately needs. the band is electric, which on the reggae is wonderful, but there are moments when the bland pure licks approach of fusion rears its ugly head ("hurricane") being one example. still, the overall impression is wonderful. try it, you will enjoy it!

This album was new and being promoted when my son and I saw Monty live at Scullers in Boston a few years back. He is a truly gifted mainstream jazz pianist, expert in all idioms, but somehow managing to include the cheerful lilt of his home country Jamaica in this one. It gets played a lot at our house..Simply happy, simply elegant..emminently listenable. And he always gives a wonderful concert. I rate this the best of those I have by him.. Jim "Jazzbo" Townsend
