Editorial Reviews

From Parents' Choice®

Simplicity, terrific musicians, unforced, kid-pleasing humor and a playful lilt light up this sunny collection of songs from the '60s through the '90s by widely respected folk singer/songwriter Tom Paxton. With his trademark light touch, Paxton creates a picture perfect trip to the zoo with Woody Guthrie-type grace, creates the comic mystery of "The Marvelous Toy" ("It went 'Zip' when it moved, and 'Bop' when it stopped/And 'Whirr' when it stood still..."), and his alternative spin on human anatomy, "S'pose My Toes Were Noses," is a giggle. In "Engelbert the Elephant," Paxton weaves a story song about a very large and unexpected guest who turned out to be the hit of the King and Queen's formal dance ("The ladies were delighted at the way he turned and spun..."). The gentle finale to the fun, "Let the Wild Wind Blow," is a quiet lullaby, assuring a child of snug shelter "when the winds blow hard." A 1998 Parents' Choice® Silver Honor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still as good as 25 years ago., November 15, 2002
This review is from: Goin to the Zoo (Audio CD)
I grew up with this stuff as a kid in 70's and it was as popular with myself, my 2 brothers and my sister then as it is with my 1 year old nephew now. Apparently he won't listen to anything else in the car and as a result they've worn it out. Am now having to order another one for him and for one of his friends. Have also ordered the Christmas one as well. Mr Paxton - you owe me a pint!

We found this CD at our local public library and the whole family loved it so much that we returned it very late! Dad loved it most of all, so we are buying it for him for Father's Day as he loves singing it with our one year old-- who's name is so close to "Katy" that he just is in heaven when singing that to her! I also was excited to finally discover the all the lyrics to "Going to the Zoo" as I recalled only a few . I am happy to discover that Tom Paxton also has written a children's book based on his song. We look forward to receiving that as well.
