Another Winner,
This review is from: Going Around the Sun: Some Planetary Fun (Paperback)
What works with habitats also works in outer space! This counting rhyme teaches the order of the planets with illustrations that portray these heavenly bodies both real and beautiful. Each page offers a quick "cool fact," while a content section at the book's end provides further information. The author's description of gravity as a leash holding each planet close to the sun is an example of her clear, visual prose. She also skillfully handles Pluto - since its demotion from planetary status - as all of her adult readers grew up with 9 planets, not 8. Great classroom tips and art ideas are provided at the book's end. Marianne Berkes' first leap from biology into earth science is a winner! Reviewed by Kelley Weitzel, author of Journeys with Florida's Indians and The Timucua Indians - A Native American Detective Story.

What an amazing book! The rhythm of the story combined with educational facts and the stunning illustrations make this book a win-win for parents and children! My son loves the book and has learned many interesting facts about our galaxy; he chooses this book to read to his book buddy at school! The illustrations are beautifully done. I can't wait to try the "tips from the illustrator" in the back of the book so we can make our own colorful creations!

Outta Sight!,
This review is from: Going Around The Sun: Some Planetary Fun (Hardcover)
This book is gorgeous! I've never scene planets illustrated so beautifully. A media specialist could suggest this book to any K-5 class. The simple rhyme introduces the little ones to the planets, thier order and shares something unique about each one. This quarky fact can lead older kids to more exploration of the planets. The back of the book has loads of factual information on our solar system as well, great for research and reports. Another nice perk is the author and illustrator notes in the back of the book, including a "discover more" section. Enjoy!

This book is a treasure. All the basics are here, making it a great introduction to the solar system, rendered in Marianne Berkes' fun rhymes. Janeen Mason's illustrations add an amazing swing, swoop and swirl of color to the planets, bringing them alive and reminding us that space is not cold and sterile, but alive and full of action. A gorgeous little gem of a book!
