If You Find Truth Hard to Come By,
By Dr. Gary Farr (Clearwater, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Going Back to the Basics of Human Health (Paperback)
As a practicing chiropractor and nutritionist for 20 years, I commonly find the majority of people confused about nutriton and diet. In an age where media and news provides false information, that's not surprising.People are walking time bombs! The majority of the public has no idea of what nutrition really should be, nor do they have any control over their eating habits. With the incidence of obesity and diabetes soaring in our population, I predict that in less than five years, we'll have one of the sickest populations, if not the sickest, on this planet. Mary Frost unravels the untruths, the half-truths and the hidden politics behind our sick society and arms you with facts that will change your thinking on what you put into your mouth. If you'd like a real basic book on nutrition that's easy to read and has TRUTHFUL information, this is it. Now in it's fifth printing, it's a book that you can't afford to miss. Get it today so that you don't become a statistic!

Mary Frost doesn't waste time with meaningless filler or techno-babble. Going Back to the Basics of Human Health is packed with insightful knowledge about how the human body is designed to process the food we eat... and what that food is supposed to contain... in a short, easy to read layout. She compares today's foods with those that were available in the 1940's and 50's... citing that fruits and vegetables of today contain only a fraction of the nutrients that were available in the same foods only a few decades ago. Mary Frost uses layman terminology to describe an otherwise difficult relationship between our health and our food. For example, in a mere 4 paragraphs, she is able to debunk the myth of "good and bad" cholesterol and define the role cholesterol "actually" plays in our bodies... all in a manner that is completely understandable. She continues the debunking adventure by thoroughly explaining why low protein / high carbohydrate diets can't maintain optimum health and how they can actually lead to numerous problems when used over long periods of time. The book is short enough to read in one night, but packed with enough information that you'll want to read it again and again. I highly recommend Going Back to the Basics of Human Health by Mary Frost.

What a Great Book,
By George Washington (San Mateo, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Going Back to the Basics of Human Health (Paperback)
Mary Frost goes into soil depletion, pestiside and fungiside contamination and toxicity, pasturization, processed foods, fatty acids, vitamins, the FDA, and the importance of whole food supplements. Her book has an edge to it, but is well deserved and well needed. I agree with her that the public needs to wake up and smell the MTBE in our coffee. Good for her. I love this book and will recommend it to all of the people in my life, patients and students alike.Well Written with Intelligence and Compassion

The information is so informative. It just makes so much sense and it's amazing the FDA has not been more strict on the way food is grown and processed for our health. Everyone should read this book!

I have a holistic medical experience with our former family doctor [Dr. John Baron, who retired in his early nineties] and therefore open to the material contained within this book [I have the first print edition that was available through his office].
I recently lowered my cholesterol by 31 points [244 to 203] in a period of about 40 days, using the information in the book [didn't take any meds]. There is no conclusive evidence that what I did was the sole cause of the drop in points or that the results would be typical, but I have a hard time believing that it was mere coincidence. If there is validity in what I did and the results, isn't it worth a look? A relative of mine, a physician, has cholesterol approaching the 300's and I doubt he would even consider trying the non-pharmaceutical alternative. The average physician will undoubtedly poo-poo it anyway as unsubstantiated nonsense. Incidentally, my family doctor sent me a Dear John letter [with no explanation] and I suspect it has something to do with my belief that the responsibility of maintaining proper health first lies with the individual, and then the physician. If you are thirsting for more than conventional medical wisdom, are dissatisfied with treatments that have not really proved effective or have suspicions or doubts based on direct or indirect experiences, then take a look at this book. It's easy to understand and a rather light at only 99 pages. I guarantee that you will be astonished by what you learn because much of it is very contrary to what we have grow up believing. Which begs the question: If there is any validity to the content, why isn't there more interest from the medical community - especially since expensive high-tech medicine does not always provide lasting solutions? All I know is that lab work doesn't lie. And you have nothing to loose if addressing a chronic condition involves merely changing your diet and/or lifestyle. Just break it to your physician gently, lest you offend him/her.

It's a pretty good book. Doesn't answer all the questions but is a good basic addendum to a complete library. Especially if you appreciate Standard Process.

Although I agree with many of the views of this author, I found this book frustrating to read. It was written like one of those overbearing e-mails you get with lots of capitalized and bolded text. Though studies were referenced, sources were often not clearly or properly cited. The flow was also confusing and the book lacked specific recommendations (e.g. although there is a whole section on protein and the importance of consuming enough, there are no recommendations on what amounts of protein are appropriate). With some competent editing support, I think this book could have been much more compelling and effective. Essentially, I support the intent of the book, but I didn't find it to be effective.
