Book Description

December 28, 1998
Black brides face a wide range of choices when planning their weddings--whether they're following old traditions or creating new ones. The editors of Signature Bride, the only bridal magazine targeted to the Black market, have specialized in offering choices, ideas, and inspiration to today's women of color--and now they present a beautiful wedding guide that covers the process, from engagement to the Big Day. With a smart style and a lively tone, Going to the Chapel not only discusses the basics of invitations, meal planning, music, and other practical details, it's also filled with sixteen pages of beautiful color photos and more than 140 black-and-white photos and line drawings; tips from Black designers and other experts (including the supermodel Iman); and warm, witty advice on how to make the very best of that very special day. Whether the bride prefers a wedding that reflects her culture, history, and faith, or a creative, make-your-own-rules bash--or a little bit of both--this is the guide that explores the options...and helps her create the day of her dreams.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These three books offer all the up-to-date advice on weddings that this year's crop of couples might need. Going to the Chapel, compiled by the editors of Signature Bride magazine, is aimed at black couples and includes ways to add African elements to a "traditional" wedding or to use authentic African customs throughout. Included are Yoruba and Christian Nigerian suggestions as well as Muslim practices. One of the most popular sites on the World Wide Web is theknot.com, which serves over 250,000 visitors per month. Its editorial staff has put together a print guidebook to all the nuances of wedding and honeymoon planning. This guide includes everything that Emily Post ever mentioned but will be more appealing to the cybergeneration. McCoy concentrates on getting the most for your wedding dollar. Her book is concise and well organized, with worksheets, resource lists, and even wedding cake recipes. Her chapter on selecting diamonds is outstanding. Any of these titles will be a good choice for public libraries. Those serving a large, diverse population will want them all. Those that can only manage one or two will have to consider their current collections and the needs of their particular clientele.?Susan B. Hagloch, Tuscarawas Cty. P.L., New Philadelphia, OH

From Booklist

The editors have put together a book that helps black couples evaluate their style in order to organize and plan for their wedding day. Advice and details cover topics ranging from announcing the engagement to the selection of flowers to the inclusion of African-and Caribbean-inspired symbols, attire, and customs. The guide includes 16 pages of color photos, 140 black-and-white photos and line drawings, and tips from black designers and other experts. It gives advice on planning for Muslim and Christian ceremonies. One of the unique features of this guide is a chapter on fitness, health, and beauty that helps the couple prepare for the ceremony and a lifetime of well-being. The appendixes include the bride's calendar, resources, and an index. Although the majority of businesses listed are in New York, resources in other major markets are also listed. The editors have put together a useful and unique blend of wedding planning tips geared exclusively to African American couples. Lillian Lewis

I felt the book was extremely helpful to me. I am in the process of planning for my Afrocentric wedding in the year 2000 and the book gave me a starting place. It also gave me some cultural background and insight that will be helpful not only for my wedding but my marriage as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Precise and Helpful!, October 6, 2000
This review is from: Going to the Chapel (Hardcover)
A quick spur of the moment wedding that I had waiting for my entire life, this book was wonderful in setting your own themes and using creativity in a new non-traditional way. The types of weddings we choose vary and so do our tastes. I won't say this book saved my life but it did give me a more grounded reality of how I could adapt the wedding to my "our" tastes and also gave contact information on various venues. Very helpful.
