Grade 2-3AMark not only has to face his first day at a new school, but must also cope with the fact that he is deaf and no one else in the class knows sign language. He is embarrassed to have an interpreter follow him around and is self-conscious about his hearing aids. All of these problems ring true and will help hearing-impaired children identify with similar mainstreaming situations. The story may also help hearing children understand deafness. However, the text, while realistic and well meaning, is somewhat stiff and obvious. The illustrations are similarly heavy-handed, drawn in a stylized, almost graffiti-like style, with heavy lines and often featureless faces.
