Why are the Olympic Games so special? These exciting stories of courage, teamwork, and willpower bring the Olympic spirit to life. These 48-page books about fascinating subjects like pirates, mummies, and volcanoes are for proficient readers who can understand a rich vocabulary and challenging sentence structure. In addition to the stunning photographs, informative sidebars, and glossary, readers will find archival photographs and paintings. Averaging 4,500 to 5,000 words in length, Level 4 books are 40 percent pictures and 40 percent text. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Donkin focuses on six Olympians: Jesse Owens, Shelley Mann, Mamo Wolde, Daley Thompson, Jennifer Capriati, and Kerri Strug. Each athlete's moment of glory is described in a short story and illustrated with crisp, full-color photographs. Sidebars offer interesting facts about the Games. Particularly intriguing are the descriptions of the sports in which these six competed. The different strokes in swimming, the positioning of a shot putter, the technique of smashing in tennis, all are described. It is unfortunate that the book does not have an index and that the table of contents is vague, making it difficult to find the individual athletes. Unsuitable for reports, this is a book for young browsers.
