About the Author

Brian Spangler is a husband, father and a quiet engineer; at least that's what he thought he was. Turns out there's a writer trapped within that engineer's brain! Slowly but surely, Brian Spangler has dug his inner writer out--one genre at a time. He's a bestselling author of Women's Fiction, and dabbles in Science Fiction/Dystopian, and even wrote a few Supernatural Thrillers... a very interesting mix of genres, with more yet to come.

Originally born in Philadelphia--as one-half of a set of twins--he now resides in Virginia with his wife and two children (also twins!). And adding to the family are three cats, a parrot, lizard, mouse, chinchilla and the occasional random scary creatures who visit late at night, as wild, scary animals are apt to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars ~~The Fog~~ March 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Emily and her family are in the midst of an outbreak of fog. Phil, the dad, says they must hurry to escape it as it is poisonous.

Mom's message written to Emily is poignant and heartbreaking.

A most interesting short story which certainly has the potential for another in the series.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Going Gray August 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Going Gray and it's storyline completely captivated me. I was literally on the edge of my seat during the first chapter; I found it totally gripping and enthralling. Dystopian fiction is truly the new intrigue. The ending has a twist that I did not see that coming...and of course, that raises all sorts of questions for a sequel!

Is it chemical warfare..weather controlled by machines gone mad? Regardless, it's a pretty frightening concept. And not so totally off the mark, either. Stephen King's The Stand is one of the first, foremost of all dystopian thrillers. Going Gray reminded me of that. The whole concept of mankind mucking up nature and humanity...and how the survivors adapt and pick up the pieces because they have no choice but to do so. Going Gray is worth the read, and leaves you wondering "what if"?

3.0 out of 5 stars A murky gray August 9, 2014
By Jeanine
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Going gray had its moments. It seems to start with a bang and reaches out to grip your interest. And then an annoying thing happens. Everyone keeps saying hurry --because of looming danger-- but no one hurries. Later on, quite frequently, there's a crisis and someone sensibly yells "Run!" but no one runs.

Also, I was puzzled by the remarkable healing abilities of the main characters. The heroine is in a car wreck and thinks she broke a rib and is coughing up blood, which is not a good sign by the way, but she is able to run around the mall, carry dead people, climb ladders, etc. I fell and bruised a rib once, and I could walk, but only very carefully and slowly.

Now about the plot. Disaster strikes and it's a doozy. The problem there is you're given no clue how it happened or why it happened, even though the father of the heroine works on the machine everyone thinks caused it. The story just starts in the middle of the disaster and after that you're in a fog. Literally.

However, if you don't care too much about the whys or the wherefores and just want to read about a young girl coping with the world falling apart all around her, the story does have plenty of action and suspense to keep you turning pages. But in the end it will leave you with a lot of frustrating questions.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book! August 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this book. I had read Gray Skies and Blinded by Sight before reading Going Gray. Even though I knew what was going to happen I was still on the edge of my seat and could not put this book down.

The book starts off with a bang and the end of the world as we know it. The beginning definitely has you on the edge of your seat and it hard to put down. The premise of the story is new and different from most of the current apocalypse books. I have nothing against zombies, viruses, financial collapse, war etc. etc. etc., but they are getting to be a little old. Also the book doesn't spend a lot of time focusing on rebuilding society, or the trials and tribulations of the survivors. We have read enough books to know how that goes. It really focuses on the beginning of the apocalypse and really has you guessing what and how did it happen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wanted more background! August 16, 2014
By dmb4500
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
May contain spoilers::: I read this not realizing there were several more books to follow. I was sucked into it pretty quickly and it made for a fast read. BUT too much fell into the unrealistic category as survivors carried on their lives. I could see how this story could have had more depth to lead to the continuing stories. I empathized with the main character, however, and presume that was the goal. I would have enjoyed a longer novel with more details and how the group made it work. The epilogue was too tidy of a wrap up. I tried reading the next story, but it jumped too far ahead when I wanted to hear more about the group in this book. This book is lingering in my thoughts, ergo the 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story September 4, 2014
By charlie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very well written intriguing story. It keeps you guessing and on your toes. I really got into the story right away because it
starts off with a bang. It ends on a cliff hanger and that is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. It's the authors choice but I
don't like to read a story that I don't feel completely finished at the end.

The good news is I would read the next book. No sex, violence of course but not over the top. Ok for teens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brill! August 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Excellent work from Brian! I really enjoyed this continuation of the story which started off in the FROM THE INDIE SIDE compilation, which was one of my personal favs.

Well writen, exciting, a wee bit scary & a very touching ending.

I hope Brian has further plans with the series. In particular, more about the early days of the community, their dealings with the Outsiders and/or what happened to Emily's younger brother Justin??

4.0 out of 5 stars Going Gray... August 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The book was very interesting and definitely not my typical type of book. The book starts out in a world that has gone gray and leaves the reader intrigued. Why? How? What caused it and what is it? It was an easy read with a lot going on to keep your attention and pull you to the end. Beware the book does not answer all of your questions this is just the beginning.
