I thought today I would review a few books I have been working on for some time, but just could not convince myself to finish.
I got this book for free back on March 1. I have tried to read it a number of times, but I just can't get interested in it. It is a short book - 3740 locations.
I read about 8% of this one before giving up. This first part of the book is a boring description of mundane military stuff. I think the author was trying to set the stage for something by creating an aura of realism, but he just was not up to the task.
WEB Griffin knew how to write about the day to day life of military personnel and make it interesting to the reader.
The book was just full of stuff like this that is all but unreadable.
"I also want to invite everyone here over for a barbecue tomorrow. You can show up any time after 1100 and stay until we secure. Company Gunnery Sergeant Kemper and I are providing pork ribs, chicken, and barbecued brisket. Let me tell you at some point during the day the Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Base Hawaii will be stopping by and please don't let that prevent you from attending. I would strongly recommend you interact with Colonel Heathington during this get together but remember your military protocol or suffer the ramifications."
What military person would ever refer to a gunny as "Company Gunnery Sergeant" anyway? Or refer to the "Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Base Hawaii" in such a way? Or remind other military persons to act correctly around a Colonel? Just did not have that authentic feel to it.
So, because I quit on the book, it gets 1 star.
